Find and examine the evolution of client/server computing from file server to multilayer
applications to Web-based applications. What has been the driving force causing the
evolution? How do you think networks and distributed information systems will evolve
over the next five (5) years? And ten (10) years from now?

Evolution of Client-Server Computing

Client-server systems focus on mainframes and connected to idiotic terminals. PCs began to
evolve and replace these terminals as time passed, but the processing was still done on
mainframes. With the advancement of technology, preparation demands began to split between
PCs and mainframes. As a result, client-server computing is evolving. Here, client-server
computer evolution is divided into three major parts, such as:

 File server
o When client make a request for any information, the whole execution is
processed and transferred from the file server.
o All the information is stored in the file rather than database or other storage.
o All the information is stored in the file rather than database or other storage.
o Processing of data is done according to the clients requested information.

 Multilayer application
o Where, all the information was stored in database and displayed to the client
according to their request.
o Mainly handle other request execution and supervision of records.
o This level is positioned in between the client-side handler and server-side DBMS.

 Web based application

o The architecture of the client/server that maintain requests in form of server
based software. It can be fully controlled by web server.
o Web is one of the composite case of the client/server computing. Web assets are
overseen by server forms that can execute on devoted server PCs or on
multipurpose PC frameworks.

Driving Force for causing the evolution

From a file server program to a multi-layer application, and then to a Web-based application.
The fundamental goal of this development is to be able to access and provide information from
anywhere at any time. The entire evolution was triggered by the passage of time and
technological advancements. Beside Technological perception and business perception are the
two most important truths about the huge evolution of client/server computing. How will it
evolve?
Client/Server computing started long back. Now there are a lot of prediction, what will be the
function of the client/server computing in the next 10 years? The major evolution that will
possibly take place are; the people around the world will have access to everything all around
the world, there will be advanced security across the network, everything would much possibly
be wireless and all servers may now control data traffic where it will start taking precautionary
measures so that, the data traffic doesn’t occur.
