The Strange Case of Beriberi

1. What was the problem?
Beri beri is caused by bacteria.
2. What was the hypothesis?
If the chickens are injected with the bacteria, they will also get sick with
beri beri
3. How was the hypothesis tested?
Scientists used chickens to test the hypothesis and they injected the
chickens with bacteria from the blood of the sick patients with beri beri.
Their control group were the chickens that did not get injected with the
bacteria.
4. Should the hypothesis be supported or rejected based on the experiment?
Why?
It should be rejected because the experiment on the chickens did not prove
their hypothesis right. The control group were also sick even if they did not
have the bacteria from the blood of the people with beri beri.
5. What should be the new hypothesis?
If the chickens are given polished rice, then the chickens will have beri beri.
