APPLICATION
Your Task

1. Write down the top 10 invention in the World in the Philippines

2. Determine persisting needs were addressed by each invention

3. Discuss briefly the impact of each invention to society

TELEPHONE
> The more people got connected by trade and exploration, the more they needed a
way to easily maintain these connections and communicate with each other. Billions of
telephones are in use around the world. Alexander Graham Bell is often credited with
being the inventor of the telephone since he was awarded the first successful patent.
>The telephone made an incredible impact on society. The impact could be seen
through the quickness of communication, business, easier communication in wars, and
some negative effects too. Although the telephone became a necessity of daily life, it
was at first neglected by the public.
JEEPNEY
>The Jeepney rapidly emerged as a popular and creative way to re-establish inexpensive
public transportation, much of which had been destroyed during World War II.
Recognizing the widespread use of these vehicles, the Philippine government began to
regulate their use. ... Routes are regulated and prices are fixed fares. Leonardo Salvador
Sarao Sr.(April 13, 1921 – July 31, 2001) was the founder and owner of the Sarao
Motors, a company known for designing, manufacturing and selling the jeepney, the
most popular mode of transportation in the Philippines.
>Electric vehicles are regarded as energy transition technology towards more
sustainable and environment-friendly transportation systems. Despite the benefits of
reducing the dependence on fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions, the adoption of
electric vehicles faces several obstacles ranging from financing issues, government
policies, and public acceptance. This study aims to identify the economic,
environmental, and social impact of the adoption of electric vehicles for public
transportation.
TELESCOPE
>Telescope, device used to form magnified images of distant objects. The telescope is
undoubtedly the most important investigative tool in astronomy. It provides a means of
collecting and analyzing radiation from celestial objects, even those in the far reaches of
the universe. Galileo made his first telescope in 1609, modeled after telescopes
produced in other parts of Europe that could magnify objects three times.
>Telescopes have opened our eyes to the universe. Early telescopes showed that Earth
was not the center of the universe, as was previously believed. They also showed
mountains and craters on the moon. Later telescopes have revealed geography and
weather on the planets in our solar system.
MICROSCOPE
>A microscope is a laboratory instrument used to examine objects that are too small to
be seen by the naked eye. Microscopy is the science of investigating small objects and
structures using a microscope. Microscopic means being invisible to the eye unless
aided by a microscope.
>Microscopes are very important in our society. Their functions allow citizens to do
many things such as identify deadly viruses and illnesses and determine what a cancer
cell looks like. As technology progressed, we can see cells, proteins, electrons, particles,
and viruses with the help of microscopes.
CARACOA
>The large outrigger warships from the Philippines. They were used by native Filipinos,
notably the Kapampangans and the Visayans, during seasonal sea raids. Karakoa were
distinct from other traditional Philippine sailing vessels in that they were equipped with
platforms for transporting warriors and for fighting at sea. During peacetime, they were
also used as trading ships.
>This platform can be covered by an awning of woven palm leaves (kayang,
Spanish: cayanes) during hot days or when it rains, protecting the crew and
cargo. Karakoa lacked a central rudder and was instead steered by large oars controlled
by the nakhoda (helmsman) seated in a covered structure near the back of the ship.
These oars could be raised at a moment's notice to avoid obstructions like shallow reefs .

PAINTING PRESS
>The printing press allows us to share large amounts of information quickly and in huge
numbers. In fact, the printing press is so significant that it has come to be known as one
of the most important inventions of our time. It drastically changed the way society
evolved.
>Its immediate effect was that it spread information quickly and accurately.
This helped create a wider literate reading public. However, its importance lay not just
in how it spread information and opinions, but also in what sorts of information and
opinions it was spreading.
LIGHT BULB
>The electric light bulb has been called the most important invention since man-made
fire. The light bulb helped to establish social order after sundown, extended the
workday well into the night, and allowed us to navigate and travel safely in the dark.
Without the light bulb, there would be no nightlife. Thomas Edison created the first
commercially successful light bulb in 1979, but the story of the lightbulb begins long
before this.
>One of the most notable impacts of the light bulb was that it made longer work hours
possible. While a longer work week often meant abuse of the working class, increased
nighttime productivity helped spur industrial advancements.
ERYTHROMYCIN
> Is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. It may also be used to prevent
certain bacterial infections. Erythromycin is known as a macrolide antibiotic. It works by
stopping the growth of bacteria. This antibiotic treats or prevents only bacterial
infections. It will not work for viral infections (such as common cold, flu). Using any
antibiotic when it is not needed can cause it to not work for future infections. This was
discovered by Abelardo Aguilar, a doctor who observed the antibacterial actions of the
Aspergillus species of fungi in his hometown in Iloilo. He then sent samples to his
employer, Eli Lilly Co. The antibacterial action was further developed by the Indiana-
based company which marketed the antibiotic under the brand name Ilosone, in honor
of the place where it was discovered.
>Antibiotic resistance leads to higher medical costs, prolonged hospital stays, and
increased mortality. The world urgently needs to change the way it prescribes and uses
antibiotics. Even if new medicines are developed, without behaviour change, antibiotic
resistance will remain a major threat.
BAMBOO INCUBATOR
>An improvised medical incubator was invented by pediatrician Fe del Mundo. This was
made up of two native laundry baskets of different sizes placed one inside the other.
Hot water bottles were placed all around between them to provide warmth. There was
also a makeshift hood over the overlapping baskets to allow oxygen to circulate within.
It was created to address the needs of rural areas with no electricity that is needed to
regulate newborn babies' body temperature.
>They had a great impact on American medicine because they demonstrated the
success of caring for premature infants using incubators. The hospitals also had an
impact on society as a whole because the public was exposed to new technology, which
greatly improved the care of premature infants.
KARAOKE
>The musical inclination of Pinoys has spurred Roberto del Rosario to invent the karaoke
sing-along system. Karaoke is actually a Japanese term which means to sing along to a
popular record with its original vocals removed. His sing along system was a compact
audio device that had a microphone, an amplifier speaker, cassette tape mechanisms, a
microphone mixer that had features that enhanced voice, and an optional radio tuner.
This machine was originally designed as a teaching device for students enrolled in voice
lessons.
>Stimulates The Brain: Performing karaoke stimulates your brain because it raises the
bar on all of those things you normally do when singing alone or to yourself. It also
causes activity in the neurons of your brain. These are the neurons that bring together
emotional, physical and psychological activity.

FEEDBACK
>I’ve learned that the science and technology has greatly influenced the development of
the Philippines society. You were able to evaluate different government policies and
programs to see how they have shaped the nation. And also learned due to the constant
of innovation introduced by science and technology which has end goal to improving
lives and making the work easier, faster and efficient, our society respond by changing
as well. You will also learn significant inventors and projects accomplished by Filipinos
that greatly develop the countries science and technology, and have been a major
contributor to the Philippines nation building.s
