Mathematics
Quarter 2 – Module 1:
Giving the Place Value and the
Value of a Digit
Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners,
can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-
step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each

SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you
need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of
the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check
your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that you
will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can
best help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part
of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests, and
read the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the
tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Good luck and happy learning!

What I Need to Know
Good day, mathletes!

This module was designed to help you gain an understanding on giving the
place value and value of a digit of a given decimal number through ten thousandths.
Remember that the place value is the position of the digit in a number. It determines
the value that the number holds. While the value of a digit in a given decimal is the
product of that digit holding the decimal place and the value of that position.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. give the place value and the value of a digit of a given decimal number
through ten thousandths; and
2. apply the place value and the value of a digit of a given decimal number
through ten thousandths.
(M5NS-IIa-101.2)

What I Know
Directions: Choose the letter of the best answer. Write the chosen letter on a
separate sheet of paper.

Lesson Giving the Place Value and the Value

1 of a Digit of a Given Decimal Number

through Ten Thousandths

Place value is a system in which the position a digit holds in a number

determines its value. If you know the place values of digits in a given number or
decimal, then definitely you can give the value of that certain digit.

What’s In

Here is a place value chart. All you have to do is to plot the numbers exactly.

Directions: Plot each digit in the place value chart. The other one is already done for
you to serve as your guide.

What’s New

Consider studying this example. The decimal 123.4567 is plotted correctly in place
value chart and the value of each digit is also given correctly.

What Is It

One thing you need first to learn about decimals numbers is the place value.
The place value is the position of the digit in a number. It determines the value that
the number holds. The value of a digit in a given decimal is the product of that digit
holding the decimal place and the value of that position.

Study the table below.

Decimal Point

Thousandths

Thousandths
Place Value

Hundredths
Tenths
Ones
Tens

Ten
Digits 1 0  4 8 7 6

Value 10 0  .4 .08 .007 .0006

In 10.4876 the digit 0 is a place holder of ones place. Its value is 0. Digit 1 is
in the tens place. Its value is 10. Digit 4 is in the tenths place. Its value is 0.4. The
digit 8 is in the hundredths place. Its value is 0.08. The digit 7 is in the thousandths
place. Its value is 0.007. And digit 6 is in the ten-thousandths place. Its value is
0.0006. Hence, 10.4876 means ten and four thousand eight hundred seventy-six ten
thousandths.

Here is other example: In 2.4895,

Digit Place Value Value
2 Ones 2
4 Tenths 0.4
8 Hundredths 0.08
9 Thousandths 0.009
5 Ten thousandths 0.0005
