spread of smoke. The gaps between a door leaf and its frame are necessary for everyday
operation but they form an area of vulnerability for the passage of smoke and flames in a fire
situation. Positive pressure is generated when a fire starts in a closed room which creates smoke
and gasses to rapidly expand.
Hager Companies sealing systems provide impressive benefits for building occupants in terms of
life safety. It is a fact that smoke travels further than fire and at a much higher speed. Hager’s
product offering is designed to block smoke, draft, sound and air. An intumescent sealing system,
fitted around the perimeter of a door assembly, will expand on exposure to the intense heat from
a fire. The expansion of intumescent will form a highly efficient barrier to the passage of flames
and hot gasses under positive pressure.

Categories of Positive Pressure Openings
Category “B” doors – fire doors that require the addition of an edge seal to comply with
positive pressure requirements. Edge seals could be intumescent and/or gasketing – whatever the
manufacturer has approval for. The edge seal systems are typically added to the frame.
Category “G” edge sealing systems – edge seals that are surface-applied to frames or
doors. These seals may or may not have an effect on meeting the leakage requirements for the
smoke ("S") rating. NFPA105, UB7-2 and UL1784.
Category “H” smoke and draft control gasketing – gasketing materials that are
added to a door assembly to comply with the requirements of UBC 7-2-97 Part 2, NFPA105 and
UL1784.
Category “J” gaskets – gasketing materials that are added to a door assembly for purposes
other than Category “G” edge seals and Category “H” smoke and draft control gaskets. They are
used for purposes such as weatherstripping and for sound control. They meet the requirements
for positive pressure test and can be used on these assemblies.
