INCREASING STUDENTS VOCABULARY MASTERY BY USING EXTENSIVE

READING AT SECOND YEAR SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of The Study

English is taught so that students can more easily obtain information from other
countries. In other words, by learning English they should be able to absorb and keep up
with the development of science, technology and art. Based on the English curriculum, it
develops four skills, namely reading, speaking, writing and speaking. All four skills are
supported by elements of language learning, namely structure, vocabulary, pronunciation
and spelling. In this case, vocabulary is one of the important linguistic elements that must
be mastered by the students. Vocabulary is one of the essential aspects of successful
second language use because without an extensive vocabulary you will not be able to use
the structures and functions that you can learn for full communication.
According Charles D. Fries (1945: 959) vocabulary is an essential part of learning
a foreign language, where students are required to master word for word so as to allow
increased student vocabulary. It can be said that mastering an intensive vocabulary world
naturally help the student to speak fluently, especially in English by reading text or
listening English stories. The vocabulary includes group of words, words are known not
just as individual words but also as a group of words that have a meaning. Vocabulary is
required in language skills, for example while speaking, students will have or become
difficult to speak English. They have difficult choosing the word to speak to the other
when they have limited vocabulary.
Some English teacher in SMAN 2 Bulukumba they still use traditional strategies
to teach vocabulary to students like find the difficult words in dictionary or memorize
vocabulary, the teacher needs to be smart about choosing strategies to teach vocabulary.
Vocabulary is best learned when the meaning of words is illustrate such as using a picture
or real object. To increase students’ vocabulary, the teacher should use an interesting
techniques. One of the methods is extensive reading.
B. Problem Statement
Based on the above context, the researcher formulates a question as follows:
1. What the strategies of increase the students’ vocabulary mastery at second year senior
high school?
2. Whether the techniques used can help students increase their vocabulary mastery at
second year senior high school?
C. Objective of The Study
Based on the problem statement, the objective of the study are:
1. Describe the strategies for increase the students vocabulary mastery at second year
senior high school
2. Explain the technique used to increase vocabulary mastery of students at second year
senior high school
D. Scope of The Study
The research is limited to the teaching English at second year senior high school
SMAN 2 Bulukumba in academic 2021/2022. The researcher is focused to increase the
students’ vocabulary through reading techniques.

LITERATURE RIVIEW

A. Review of Related Literature

Richards and Renandya (2002: 225) states that vocabulary is a core component of
language proficiency and provides much of the basis for how well learners speak, listen,
read, and write. They also say that without an extensive vocabulary and a reading strategy
to acquire new ones, students often have difficulty understanding the English text. A
vocabulary can define a voice with the express meaning and from independent units in a
language. Vocabulary could be said to be smallest units of the spoken process of
individual meanings in order to be a speaker and interact with another persons’
vocabulary as well as a phrase.
B. Theoretical Review
1. Vocabulary
Vocabulary is the fundamental aspect of the language that must be mastered
before proficiency in English. According to Hornby (2006: 1645) vocabulary is all
the words that a person knows or uses and it all the words in a particular language.
Vocabulary is any word in a language that is familiar to a person and used by a
person to communicate with one another.
2. The Importance of Vocabulary
Vocabulary is fundamental to communication, so it is not impossible for someone
to participate in a conversation if they cannot understand or discern the meaning of
the keywords used by other people. According to Thornbury (2002: 14) vocabulary
means a large collection of items. He say that learning vocabulary is important
because it enriches someone’s word knowledge. This implies that the students’
success in learning a language depends not only on the size of the vocabulary learned
but also on the construction of the vocabulary.
Vocabulary mastery is important in reading, because without mastering
vocabulary, they cannot read successfully. With a good vocabulary domain, we can
use the language for communication because you are aware of the ideas and attitudes
that are represented by the words.
3. Extensive Reading
Extensive reading is a second language approach to reading in which, when
students read extensively they read very simple and entertaining books to increase
their reading speed and fluency. Extensive reading helps students’ improve reading
speed and fluency, especially developing reading speed is important as it helps
students understand the language faster and better.
4. The Benefits of Extensive Reading
Extensive reading gives students the opportunity to read longer texts of their
choice that they can read at their own pace and level of knowledge, students can read
better and learn more vocabulary and it makes the student increase their vocabulary.

RESEARCH METHOD

A. Research Design
Research design is a process of obtaining data. This research design was a
quantitative by using one group study. The researcher used a pre-experimental design
because the researcher wanted to measure student’s vocabulary using extensive reading.
B. Variable and Indicator
1. Variable
The variable in this study consisted of two variables, the independent variable and
the dependent variable. The independent variable is the extensive reading , it is an
approach that the teacher uses in teaching the material while the dependent variable is
the effect or result of the independent variable. The dependent variable in this
research is to increase the student’s vocabulary.
2. Indicator
The indicator of this research is extensive reading approach to increase the
student’s vocabulary mastery through reading a novel.
C. Population and Sample
1. Population
The population of this research is the second year senior high school at SMAN 2
Bulukumba. Consisted of 10 classes, each classes consisted of five IPA classes and
five IPS XI classes. And each class consisted of 30 students, therefore the population
in this study was 300 students.
2. Sample
The researcher used the cluster sampling technique. The researcher took a class as
a sample, the sample for this research was grade XI IPA 2 which consisted of 30
students.
D. Research Instrumental
The research tool in this research was the vocabulary test, the test was twice the
pre-test and the post-test. The first test was pre-test, the purpose of the pre-test was to get
the students initial knowledge of the vocabulary. In this test, the first test encounter was
given before applying the extensive reading and the second test was the post-test. This
test was performed after the treatments or after using an extensive reading approach to
increase the students’ vocabulary mastery.
E. Procedure of Data Collection
The researcher used several steps to collect data in this study as follow:
1. Pre-test
Before the treatments, the researcher conducted a pre-test on the students to
measure the students’ command of the basic vocabulary.
2. Treatments
After performing the pre-test, the researcher conducted the treatments using an
extensive reading approach.
F. Procedure of Data Analysis
The data was collected from the vocabulary test, which was analyzed according to
the following procedure:
To calculate the students test score:
A Students Score = the students correct answer x 100
The total number of items
