Descriptive Title: Labor Law I
Term: SY 2021-2022, First Semester

I. Course Description:
This is an introduction to the basic concepts related to labor law
particularly those that relate to Labor Standards.

II. Course Objective:

The course aims at providing the student with a good overview of the Labor
Standards laws in the Philippines. The course will also equip the student with an
understanding on how these laws are applied in actual cases decided by the
Supreme Court as well as situational problems usually given in the bar exams.

Students successfully completing this course should be able to:

1. State the legal bases of labor law and tell where it may be found and
enumerate the basic rights of workers and employers;

2. Determine correctly when an employer-employee relationship exists and


differentiate job contracting from labor-only contracting;

3. Tell when there is illegal recruitment; discuss the rights of apprentices,


learners and the disabled;

4. State the minimum standards on hours of work, rest days, holidays,


various leaves, minimum wages, payment and protection of wages, 13th
month pay, and the working conditions for women, minors, house helps and
other special groups of workers;

5. Discuss the right to security of tenure and explain when an employee


may quit his/her employment;

6. Identify the just and business-related causes for termination of


employment; describe the procedural requirements of termination of
employment; and identify the reliefs and remedies in cases of illegal
dismissals;

7. Apply the knowledge gained from this cause to solve contemporary


problems relating to labor.
