Humanity is facing one of the most challenging events from the last hundred years,
COVID-19. In 2020 most of the cities around the world were forced to a lockdown,
avoiding the spread of the virus, it was a tough year. However, I strongly believe that from
every crisis, there is a world of opportunities and for science, technology and innovation, it
is a great time.

We know that this disease is one of the worst since WWII, but the great difference now, is
that we have science and technology on our side. For example, vaccines have been
developed at a very impressive rate and approved by many countries in less than a year, all
of this with the help of biotechnology, but not just public health or medicine have been
challenged, many other fields also.

Nowadays, Artificial Intelligence is a powerful tool to do complex task that for humans can
result impossible or can take a lot of time to do it. This kind of algorithms are capable to
seek for relevant information, patterns or even perform some forecasts from a set of data
from a country regarding epidemiological information, with this, governments or
companies can take strategical decisions to counteract the progress of the pandemic or for
the business.

Personally, I think, this is the time where science is shining, and for Mexico it is great time
to take advantage of all its scientific resources, like universities, research centers and
scientist to develop knowledge and technology in favor of the country. Mexico specifically
has a high-level research in medicine and related sciences to develop solutions during the
pandemic. It is known that in the country exists a lack of scientist, but unemployment
during this difficult time and mostly in young people, can open them the opportunity to be
formed as scientist in any scientific field. Despite companies cannot offer as many
employments as in the past, it exists a lot of graduate degrees that are waiting for curious
and passionate people about science and technology.

Today, science and technology are playing an extremely important roles in the pandemic,
from the scientist that has to discover how the virus infect us, until the engineer and
mathematicians that are developing an algorithm to forecast the behavior of the pandemic
with the help of supercomputers in university labs.

Technology is fascinating and I consider myself a passionate person about it. I’m an
engineer that work in the automotive industry since the last five years, and I really
impressed how Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Additive Manufacturing,
Software development, Data Science, CAD/CAE among many other technologies are used
to develop incredible products. Today, autonomous vehicles had received a lot of attention
not only in the automobile industry, also when we talk about smart cities, delivery services
and mobility. It has been said that autonomy will be a key player on how we are going to
move from one point to another, but neither cities nor governments are prepared with the
necessary regulations and infrastructure to adopt this kind of vehicles. Companies are
hardly-working in the development of this kind of technologies and reach a full
autonomous vehicle, this means a driverless car, in today’s automobiles, we have a lot of
technology to assist us while driving, with the main purpose of keeping us safe against any
accident. Nowadays, some cars can drive by themselves but always with the presence of
the driver that always needs to keep the eyes on the road, also, some of them include a
parking assistant mode, where we just need find a free spot and the car park by itself.

Autonomy implies that the car is a super computer that can take decisions according the
information that comes from the exterior environment, this means, receive information
from sensors and cameras, process the information in a very short period of time and finally
take decisions to drive the car properly. One of the most known OEM leading the market, is
Tesla, not just for its electric and luxury cars, also of their high level of autonomy that they
include in each vehicle, as in airplanes, you can activate the automatic pilot, but always
keeping the eyes on the road. Another impressive fact about Tesla’s cars, is the capacity to
update their software every time the company release a new version of it, all downloaded
from the cloud. It’s the same we do every day with our smartphones. But not just Tesla is
this competition, Ford, Rivian, BWM, GM, Lucid Motors, Byton, Apple or even Amazon
are in this race.

Other interesting facts about the new generation of vehicles, are their capacity to be “smart”
and the connectivity they have. Now, we can synchronize our phones with the car, is
fascinating how we can control remotely many features of the car from our smartphone,
like, check fuel levels, unlock the doors or even turn on the motor. We can program our
vehicle in a hotspot, so everybody can connect to the Wi-Fi everywhere we are. Talking
about autonomy and smart cities, it exists the possibility that automatically communicate
with the car that is behind us so it can stop on time because of an accident in front of us.
Have you imagined that the car could be connected to our house, and the coffee is ready
when we arrived? Well, now this can be possible with all these new technologies, be
prepared for a smart future.
