RENAISSANCE ESSAY

(Intro Paragraph)

The Trebuchet, now known as the Catapult, was a very important

invention during the Renaissance period, as well as the Da Vinci Catapult along

with its creator. The story behind Catapults is something you’d never expect.

It was in the 400BCE when the first catapult was made by the Greek Dionysius

the Elder of Syracuse, he was looking to develop a new type of weapon. 1480-

1600 were the years when catapults impacted the Renaissance period. A new

version of the catapult was made by the one and the only Leonardo Da Vinci.

He was known as the “Renaissance man” because of his incredible creativity

and with many talents.

Da Vinci’s catapult was invented around the 1480s, right after the Gunpowder

was invented, the Gunpowder was created in the 9th-century and spread

throughout most parts of Eurasia by the end of the 13th century. Da Vinci didn’t

think the invention was reliable enough, so to fix that he decided to create a

new invention and he ended up making the Catapult.

(BODY PARAGRAPH)

During the Renaissance Da Vinci’s Catapult was mostly used for City-state

defense, the weapon was best for throwing objects at a high and far distance
such as getting over high castle walls. Da Vinci’s Catapult was able to throw

objects up to 1300 feet and 150-300 meters. Da Vinci’s Catapult impacted

Renaissance society by being one of the most used weapon during the

Renaissance, so everyone in the military would have to learn to use a Catapult,

and others would have to know how it works. Da Vinci only had created two

catapults specifically for warfare, It was basically a killing machine.
