Introduction to Tekla Structural

Designer

Pre-requisites of running Seismic Check

1. Set the design code to Malaysia (Eurocode) as the Seismic Wizard is based on
Eurocode – EC8
2. Complete the analysis and design for static load combinations using Design All
(Static) with Gravity (G & Q) and Lateral (G, Q, W & EHF) combinations (where
applicable)

Pre-requisites of running Seismic Check

3. Save your Gravity (G & Q) and Lateral (G, Q, W & EHF) designed model separately.
4. Remove Wind Load Combination for Seismic Check.

Starting on Seismic Wizard

● Seismic Wizard will be used to define all the parameters required for Seismic Load
generation.
● Just follow through the step by step process and feed the software with the relevant
input.

13

Seismic Wizard - Base Information

In Base Information, some parameters are auto-detected based on your model or auto-
calculated / filled based on EC8 National Annexes but other parameters shall be reviewed

Seismic Wizard - Base Information

1. Structure Details

● Height to the highest level: Auto-calculated from your model (from Base level to
the highest point)
● Ignore seismic in floor (and below): Only floors above this level are considered
for inertia combination (vibration analysis to determine the mode shape,
fundamental periods, effective mass participation and seismic forces)
● Number of stories: Auto filled based on number of floor “ticked” in the
construction level.

15

Seismic Wizard - Base Information

2. Ground Acceleration

● Region: Peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak or Sabah.

● Reference Peak Ground Acc, agR : refer to PGA Contour Map

(Be cautious refer to lecture notes).

● Design Ground Acc, ag: Auto calculated based on

agR*(importance factor)*(9.81)/100

3. Importance & Ground

● Importance Class: I to IV

● Soil Deposit: <= 30m or > 30m (response spectrum model B only).

● Ground Type: Type A to E

● Importance Factor: Automatically derived from the selected Importance Class

● Spectrum Type: Type 1 / Type 2 in EC8 main code is irrelevant for MY

17

Seismic Wizard - Base Information

● Lower bound factor: Automatically derived

● Upper limit of the period of the constant spectral acceleration branch:

Automatically derived

● Structural Ductility Class: Low, Medium, High

Seismic Wizard - Structure Regularity

1. Structure Elevation Regularity: to define any elevation irregularities (for ELF Only)

2. Structure Plan Regularity: to define any plan irregularities (for ELF Only)

3. Analysis Procedure to be used:

● Use Equivalent lateral force procedure (ELF)

● Use Modal Response Spectrum Analysis (RSA)

Notes:
• Structure plan regularity – only visible 3
for medium or high structural ductility class

19

Seismic Wizard - Fundamental Period

If RSA is selected on the period page, Use Model Analysis option is to be selected.
Else, if ELF is selected, all 3 options are available.

1. Fundamental Period Definition:

● Use approx. fundamental period Ta:
Calculate the fundamental period for
directions 1 and 2 (T1approxDir1 and T1approxDir2)
based on defined structure type below,
and total structure height in first page.

● Use defined fundamental period:

Use the user defined fundamental period
1
for each directions 1 and 2 (T1Dir1and T1Dir2).

● Use Modal Analysis: Vibration analysis is performed

to determine the fundamental periods
of both directions 1 and 2

2. Fundamental Period Dir 1 & 2

● Structure Type:

○ Concrete moment resisting frames

○ Eccentrically braced steel frames

○ All other structural systems

21

Seismic Wizard - Behaviour Factor

1. If Ductility Class was set to Low in the Base Information page, the Behaviour Factor
(q) will automatically set to 1.5. However, it can also be user defined by editing the
value.

22

2. For Medium or High Ductility Class, the Behaviour Factor (q) in direction 1 and 2 is
determine as follow:

● Ductility Class: Medium or High

● Structure Type: Concrete Frame or Steel Frame
● Frame Type: Selection options as below based on the Structure Type selected.

Seismic Wizard - Combination

Generator
Equations 6.12a and 6.12b are used to generate the combinations.
The specified factors will be used to generate an appropriate number of
combinations to cover for Dir1+/- and Dir2 +/- with +/-eccentricities.

Loadcases:
Seismic RSA load cases are generated for each direction along with
Seismic Torsion load case Combinations:
One base shear (Seismic inertia) and four Seismic RSA combinations are
generated.

RSA Analysis and Member Design

● Seismic required is considered in additional to the static design.
● Design All (RSA) will perform RSA analysis and also design the members.
