MODULE 5

Answer the following

1. You study the attrition of entering college freshmen (those students who enter college
as freshmen but don’t stay to graduate). You find the following relationships among
attrition, aid and distance of home from college.
a. What graphical display would you choose to understand the data? Why?
b. What is your interpretation of the data below?
Home Near Home Far
Aid
Receiving Aid Receiving Aid
Yes No Yes No Yes No
% % % % % %
Drop out 25 20 5 15 30 40
Stay 75 80 95 85 70 60

2. Construct a stem-and-leaf display about the average annual purchase of Target’s top
50 customers

59 61 62 64 66 66 67 69 69 70

153 163 166 183 206 218 218 220 221 222

ANSWER

1. A. The best graphical display to understand the data is by using bar graph because the
bar graph is one of the easiest representations of nominal data and participants that able
to see the difference between the variable. Having the data presented in the bar graph
helps people to understand the information better.

B. The data below is based on whether or not the student received aid, his home
location, and whether he stayed or dropped out the first year. The interpretation of the
data shown on illustration 1 is about the aid has a direct correlation to students staying in
first year. When looking at the two graphs or table which show the distance of the
location of students with regard to aid. Both graphs are students that stay versus that drop
out which receive aids. If the school giving aids to the students they can save money and
many students are able to stay rather then drop out.
