SOGIE BILL - ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY

Man, Woman, Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender— people all over the
world, no matter who you are or where you came from we are all bombarded and is
faced with a lot of obstacles in the everyday situations of their lives:A lack of job
opportunities (Sears & Mallory, 2011) and discrimination when obtaining health care
(Winter, 2012), accommodation (Grant, Mottet & Tanis, 2011) and education (Burns,
2011) are examples. Corrective rapes are still committed against lesbians (Brown,
2012), while the killing of LGBT community members continues in numerous
countries amid the demands for equality and liberation from all types of bigotry and
oppression (Brown 2012). There's been a lot of reports about the LGBT community
over the past few months. In Ateneo De Manila, there was a Pride March and a very
controversial response from a religious community. The Metro Manila Pride March
took place, with crowds enduring the rains to commemorate and rally. And everyone
has an opinion concerning Gretchen Diez, the transgender woman who was unjustly
targeted at the Quezon City mall by a janitress. There has been a lot of controversy
about addressing prejudice against LGBTQIA through a SOGIE bill because of all of
these. Currently, ICYDK, Sen. Risa Hontiveros, Sen. Imee Marcos, and Sen. Francis
‘Kikoʼ Pangilinan—have three versions of the SOGIE Bill filed in the Senate. What is
it that SOGIE means? Perhaps the most critical issue is this! Sexual orientation,
gender identity and expression are what SOGIE stands for. But anyway, what do
those words mean? First of is, Sexual Orientation. When we say this, it means that it
is about to whom you have sexual or romantic feelings. You can be heterosexual,
homosexual, bisexual or pansexual. Next is, Gender Identity. This is about how you
identify yourself, regardless of you sexual orientation. You can be male or female,
and if you feel that the gender assigned to you at birth is true to who you are, you are
cisgender. Or you can be transgender, meaning you feel that your real identity is
different from the one assigned to you at birth. While lastly, Gender Expression is
how you express or show your gender, by the way you dress, act, move, talk. Now
back to the main point, what

Now back to the main point, what is Sogie Bill and how does this help the people
of society? Well, cut it straight, the SOGIE Bill is simply a bill against discrimination.
This acknowledges that many individuals face prejudice on the basis of their SOGIE,
whether they are LGBTQIA++ or cisgender. The bill aims to protect all persons from
discrimination of this kind. Now, there are many questions with regards to this matter,
is this bill only for the LGBTQIA++ members? The answer is, no! Itʼs for Everybody,
actually! Every person has SOGIE. In a statement given by Atty. Mendoza, she said
that, "the bill applies to all. Even cis heteros have sexual orientation and gender
identity or expression. The SOGIE Equality Bill does not provide LGBTIQAs with
special rights." However, there are still some people who have said that it is not really
a need for a SOGIE Bill to be implemented since there are many members of the
LGBTQIA community who are accepted and successful in different industries. Yet
Atty. Mendoza continued with her statement with a firm contradiction saying, "There
are also members who live their lives deprived of basic rights, such as the right to
work, the right to education, the right to access to health services, facilities, and
establishments, and others, simply because of their sexual orientation and gender
identity or expression. Discrimination has been a reality in the lives of LGBTIQAs.
While some might not have been discriminated against, or might not have felt
stigmatized, it does not negate the lived experiences of others who have." Moreover,
with the help of Sogie Bill, such actions can be considered discriminatory now, and if
any person, company, or association performs these acts, you can actually file legal
charges for it, this would make the life easier for those members of LGBTQAs who
are deprived of freedom and rights from discrimination. Such practices include the
promotion of stigma and the denial of access to public service, with specific regard to
military service. To wrap things up, when the movement for LGBT equality in the
Philippines has started, many people, organizations, and even policies have tried to
address the discrimination, violence and abuse that the LGBT face which is now the
supposed bill. The discriminations do not only imply in the form of direct attacks or
harassments, but also economic discrimination when they are unable to access
employment and the labor market as freely as others do. This also places LGBT
people in a state of economic insecurity in which they either disagree with the
business in which they work or surrender the standard of their gender identity and
speech in order to escape prejudice and find a decent way of living. Nonetheless, this
does not inherently presume that they are free from mental, physical, or even
economic pressures and prejudice once they are recruited. This was the LGBT
narrative and tales of prejudice that many research and literature have covered.
Various accounts, articles, and now trending media stories were being circulated,
showcasing the myriad personalities, perspectives, and impacts that have impacted
LGBT people in the country through discrimination in jobs and the labor market. In
order to defend and help LGBT people and the injustice they face as a class, the lack
of acceptance of LGBT discrimination has a direct effect on any legal case, or even on
social , political or economic representation (Ocampo 2011) There might be some
various qualitative studies throughout the country on LGBT oppression, but there are
few studies that actually illuminate the correlations that contribute to such
discrimination and their rights in the country, which only highlights the plight of
LGBT people in the workplace and jobs in anecdotal reported cases (UNDP, USAID
2014).

With all these facts beings discussed throughout the entirely of this whole, i
stand with the Sogie Bill.
