Lab Activity

Ch 13 sec 1
Electrolytes: Strong, Weak, and Non- Electrolytes
Materials needed:
- 3 Lightbulbs
- 6 electric wires
- 3 batteries
- 3 beakers
- vinegar
- salt
- sugar
- spoon
Procedure:
- Connect the batteries to the lightbulbs.
- Connect a wire to the battery and place its end in water. Do the same for the
bulb
- Add water and observe if the bulb will light up (if using tap water, there might
be electrolytes so the bulb might light up)
- Repeat the same procedure twice
- Disconnect one of the wires
- In Beaker 1 add salt and observe
- In beaker 2 add vinegar and observe
- In beaker 3 add sugar and observe
Beaker 1 Beaker 2 Beaker 3
-salt Vinegar Sugar

Reason : Reason: Reason:

Vinegar is a weak electrolyte Sugar a non-electrolyte and
NACl which is an ionic because the rat of ionization is low therefore the current does not pass
compound so the rate of under 70% therefore its a weak through the solution because there
dissociation is 100% which is conductor of electricity and the bulb are no ions so the bulb doesn’t light
why its a very strong electrolyte lights up but turns off once in a while up at all
therefore the bulb lights up or light sup weakly
