LESSON 2: FACTORING POLYNOMIALS

I.OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:

1. use any appropriate method to factor polynomials;

2. observe the use of distributive property in reverse to bring out the common factor;
3. apply the formulas learned in the previous section to factor polynomials; and
4. recognize the combinations of factors which give the correct middle term of the trinomial
given; and
5. recognize factors of a given quadratic polynomial using a square.

II. SKILLS DEVELOPMENT:

A. Read pages 13 – 19 ( Textbook ) Math for Engaged Learning 8.

FACTORING POLYNOMIALS

1. Factoring a Common Monomial Factor – if each term of a polynomial contains a

common monomial factor, then the polynomial can be expressed as the product of this
monomial factor, and the other factor is obtained by dividing the original polynomial by
the common monomial factor.

a. x3 – 5x2 – 4x = x ( x2 - 5x – 4x )
b. 3x + 3y = 3 ( x + y )
c. x5 + x7 = x5 ( 1 + x2)

2. Difference of Two Squares –is equal to the product of the sum and difference of two
terms.

a. a2 – b2 = ( a + b ) ( a – b )
b. 9x2 – 49 = ( 3x )2 − ( 7)2 = ( 3x + 7 ) ( 3x − 7 )
c. 4x2 – 81 y2 = (2x)2 − ( 9y )2 = ( 2x + 9y ) ( 2x – 9y )
3. Factoring Perfect Square Trinomials – two of the terms are perfect squares and that the
remaining term (or the middle term) is plus (or minus) twice the product of the positive
squares roots of the perfect square terms.

a. a2 + 2ab + b2 = ( a+ b )2
b. a2 – 2ab + b2 = ( a – b )
c. x2 – 12 x + 36 = ( x – 6 )2

4. Factoring Trinomials with Distinct Factors – the trinomial acx2 + ( ad + bc ) xy + bdy2

where a, b, c, and d are integers is a quadratic trinomial coefficients. The application of the
formula requires a certain amount of trial and error.

a. acx2 + ( ad + bc )xy + bdy2 = ( ax + by ) ( cx + dy )

b. 3x2 – 13xy – 10y2 = ( 3x + 2y ) ( x – 5y )
c. a2 + 4ab – 21 b2 = ( a + 7b ) ( a – 3b )

5. Sum and Difference of Two Cubes

a. a3 – b3 = ( a – b ) ( a2 + ab + b2 )
b. a3 + b3 = ( a + b ) ( a2 − ab + b2 )
c. x3 + 8 = ( x + 2 ) ( x2 – 2x + 4 )
d. 27x3 + 64y3 = ( 3x + 4y ) ( 9x2 – 12xy + 16y2 )

6. Factoring by Grouping

a. – 5xy + 35x + 3y – 21
= ( - 5xy + 35x ) + ( 3y – 21 )
= 5x ( -y + 7 ) + 3 ( y – 7 )
= 5x ( - 1 ) ( y – 7 ) + 3 ( y – 7 )
= - 5x ( y – 7 ) + 3 ( y – 7 )
=( - 5x + 3 ) ( y – 7 )

b. 2x3 − x2 + 2x – 1
= ( 2x2 − x2 ) + ( 2x – 1 )
= x2 ( 2x – 1 ) + 1 ( 2x – 1 )
= ( x2 + 1 ) ( 2x – 1 )
c. x3 – 2x2 + 5x – 10
= ( x3 – 2x2 ) + ( 5x – 10 )
= x2( x – 2 ) + 5 ( x – 2 )
= ( x – 2 ) ( x2 + 5 )
