Identity Case Investigation Text Analysis

How does the
author successfully engage the reader in a story, full of

conversation? The author can engage the reader by using good ingredients

and techniques in creating suspense and plot. The characters in the story are

Sherlock Holmes, Mary Sutherland, Mr. Windibank, and Ms. Hosmer Angel. The

conflict in the story is about how Mary Sutherland was supposed to marry Mr.

Hosmer Angel, but he never showed up and went missing. Mary then went to

meet Sherlock Holmes asking for his help. The author can engage the reader

by showing the problem by the conversation then leads to more clues. The

story has shown ingredients used in the story, introductions to characters, and

techniques like limiting point of view, in order to create suspense and engage

the reader.

The ingredients are written well and understandable which causes the

reader to understand. The setting used in the story is shown by the image

beside the text, the victim, Mary Sutherland, who went talking to Sherlock

Holmes. The crime is about fraud, how she was tricked into marriage, “-we

waited for him to step out, but he never did-”. The suspect is Mr. Windibank

work together with Mr. Hosmer to fraud Mary into marriage, and clues like

how Mr. Windibank is gone when Mr. Hosmer Angel is also gone, we can see

this from, “Mr Windibank was going off to France again in a week, and Hosmer

wrote and said that it would be safer and better not see each other until he

had gone”. From these ingredients, the readers can understand the situation

of the conflict and are able to understand what is going on.

Characters in the story have different character traits that made the

story more interesting. The author creates characters with different character

traits and personalities. The way they are able to convey things into

sentences and from their point of view, we can understand their thinking. For

example, how Mary Sutherland is honest, she wants to tell every single detail

that happened, or Sherlock Holmes, he’s inquisitive, wants to know the details

and tries solving the problem, which he is able to. We can see this from

Sherlock Holmes’s statement, “kindly, tell us now all about your connection

with Mr Hosmer Angel.”

The author creates suspense in the story by using two techniques to

create suspense in a story that is able to engage the readers. Techniques in a

story help engage readers to be interested and bond with the story, in this

story the author uses 2 types of techniques, limiting point of view and using

the right imagery. Limiting the point of view of the audience and talking from

only a few points of view cause the readers to not know everything and have

limited clues. This technique creates suspense by putting in curiosity and

wanting to know everything and is thrilled for the upcoming clues. The other

technique used is the right imagery used in the story. The characters are

imaged detailedly and cause the reader to have their own suspects.

The author is able to use the technique and create suspense very nicely,

and can maintain the interest of the readers in the plot. In my opinion, the

story is understandable and the conflict is well-written.
