III. Essay (10 pts.)

1. Evaluate Rizal’s Higher Education at Binan, Ateneo, and University of Santo Tomas.

Rizal had his early education in Calamba and Biñan. Despite the defects of
the Spanish system of elementary education, Rizal was able to acquire the
necessary instruction preparatory for college work in Manila. It may be said that
Rizal, who was born a physical weakling, rose to become an intellectual giant not
because of, but rather in spite of, the outmoded and backward system of
instruction obtaining in the Philippines during the last decades of Spanish regime.
Jose Rizal is the Ateneo’s greatest student, graduated with a Bachelor of
Arts degree from the Ateneo Municipal. He was one of nine hailed as
sobresaliente in his graduating class of twelve. Rizal eventually earned a land
surveyor’s and assessor’s degree from the Ateneo Municipal while taking up
Philosophy and Letters at the University of Santo Tomas. Upon learning that his
mother was going blind, Rizal opted to study ophthalmology at the UST Faculty
of Medicine and Surgery. However, was not able to complete the course because
he became politically isolated by adversaries among the faculty and clergy who
demanded that he assimilate to their system.
