CHAPTER II

DISCUSSION
A. USE OF PHRASE USED TO + INFINITIVE

Used to is used to tell a past situation that is no longer true, describes a

repeated action or condition in the past which has now changed and has never been
done. Briefly in Indonesian we can interpret it as the word "Used" or "Usually".

The word Used to also has patterns or rules that can be used to make
sentences. Used to is always followed by a to infinitive. The patterns or rules are:

1) Positive Sentence: Subject + used + to infinitive

2) Negative Sentence : Subject + did not + use + to infinitive

3) Questions (Interrogative): Did + subject + use + to infinitive.

For Example:

 Positive Sentence : Subject + Used + to infinitive (to+kata kerja 1)

1) My Grandfather used to Telegraf to send text message, but not anymore

2) She used to love me but not anymore.

3) Mr. Bowman used to bring water his wife tomb with water but since he
died 2 years ago, the tomb is now dry.

 Negative Sentence : Subject + did not/didn’t + use + to infinitive

1) I didn‟t use to reading news, but now I like it.

2) Before there is a smartphone, I didn‟t use to send a message to my

brother at Korea.

3) He didn‟t use to a computer to work. Now he always used it every work.

4) He used to always wear a safety helmet in the mines, a few years ago.

5
5) We used to ring the security bell at home, because a thief came in.

6) We used to always wear safety shoes when working in the mines, but
now we don't work there anymore.

 Questions (Interrogative) : Did + subject + use + to infinitive

1) Did you use to come here as a child?

2) Did he use to fetch you before?

3) Did they use to live in that house?

B. USE OF PHRASE USED AS + NOUN

There used to be a little park with a treehouse near my house but now there
is not.

For Example :

There used to be a small garden with a tree house near my house but now
it‟s not there anymore”.

C. USE OF PHRASE USED FOR + Verb-ing

We use „for + verb-ing‟ to talk about the function of an object. It‟s used
when we want to explain what something is generally used for or what its purpose
is. We DON‟T use „for + ing to express our purpose or intention. We use to +
infinitive‟.

 For Example

1) A camera is for taking photos.

2) The headphones are for listening to music.

3) What‟s this for? (= what does this do / what is the function or purpose of
this object?)

4) This knife is for chopping onions.

6
When the subject of the sentence is a person, and we are talking about the
function of an object, it‟s also possible to use „to + infinitive‟, as well as „for +
verb-ing‟.

For Example

1) I use this box to store DVDs.

2) I use this box for storing DVDs.

3) Randi is used to living alone.
