The lesson that we discussed is all about Earth Materials and Resources specifically the soil resources which
is ecological asset that provide us a variety of ecosystem services. SOIL is commonly black or dark brown
material that is made up of a mixture of organic remains, clay or rock particles that forms the upper layer
of the earth in which PLANTS grow. There is a time that the soil is exposed and bare thus, it is more
susceptible to EROSION. EROSION is a geological phenomenon in which natural forces such as wind or
water wear away and move earthen materials.
Moreover, there are some activities that can result to EROSION such as FARMING, MINING
operations, GRAZING too much or what we called OVERGRAZING, DEFORESTATION and human
RECREATION activities. When someone do a FARMING, it can cause erosion by degrading topsoil while
MINING operations, particularly on a local level, are major contributors to erosion due to its mining
techniques such as strip mining or mountain top removal. In addition, over GRAZING is also one of the
main causes of erosion- Grazers uncover soil by removing a certain area's plant cover that can leads also to
soil compaction, decreased water retention, increased salinity, and loss of some nutrients. Also, another
activity that can significantly increase the rate of erosion in an area is deforestation. Plant life is one of the
most significant barriers to erosion, as long-lived trees and other organisms establish roots that literally
keep the soil together. Erosion can be exacerbated by URBAN and suburban growth which refers to a
mixed-use or suburban area that exists either as part of a city or as a separate residential community within
commuting distance of a city or SUBDIVISION, particularly if developers neglect the natural state of the
property. Lastly, is the RECREATION activities such as FARMING and driving vehicles off-road or
HIKING- when people drive off-road vehicles over an area, there is an even greater amount of erosion.
Erosion can be a natural and man-made hazard that can run and result in the loss of an individual's
life that's why it is important for us to make ways in preventing this kind of hazard like planting more trees
because trees or any PLANTS serve a tremendous role in preventing soil erosion. In other words, EROSION
is slowed as the SOIL is filled with PLANTS. When the SOIL is bare, however, the rate of erosion
accelerates dramatically.
Overall, erosion is a hazard that can be controlled or prevented using a variety of safe methods such
as in order to mitigate the impact of wind, plant tall trees around fields. Also, keep animals away from
stream banks, which are particularly vulnerable to erosion, and cut down on the amount of land we log and
mine as we decrease the amount of land we convert into towns. It's also a big deal if we don't use off-road
vehicles on hilly terrain. This type of activities to prevent soil erosion will come from ourselves so it is
better to discipline ourselves in doing things that are harmful to our environment and reources.
