NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION

INTRODUCTION
❖ Non-verbal communication includes facial
expressions, the tone and pitch of the voice,
gestures displayed through body language
(kinesics) and the physical distance between
the communicators (proxemics).
❖ These non-verbal signals can give clues and
additional information and meaning over and
above spoken (verbal) communication.
❖ Indeed, some estimates suggest that around
70 to 80% of communication is non-verbal.

PARA LANGUAGE
❖ Paralanguage refers to the non-verbal elements of communication used to
modify meaning and convey emotion.
❖ Paralanguage may be expressed consciously or unconsciously, and it includes
the pitch, volume, and, in some cases, intonation of speech.
❖ Sometimes the definition is restricted to vocally-produced sounds. The study of
paralanguage is known as paralinguistics.
COMPONENTS OF PARALANGUAGE
Voice quality
❖ Components- volume, pitch, rhythm, rate of speech,
pronunciation, and enunciation.
❖ Volume of your voice has to be attuned to the situation.

Voice Pitch:

❖ Your volume pitch plays a vital role in showing your


audience if you are in control of the situation or not.
Vocal characteristics:

❖ Sounds which are audible such as- crying, whistling, clearing the throat, sighing,
all these audible sounds serve to communicate something are called vocal
characteristics.
❖ Noticing and understanding these sounds can help improve communication.

Vocal segregates:

❖ Vocal segregates are also called ‘fillers’.


❖ They are the awkward components of speaking and should be avoided as much as
possible.
❖ These empty fillers indicate the lack of confidence and lack of clarity.

BODY LANGUAGE
❖ Body language is a type of nonverbal
communication in which physical behaviors, as
opposed to words, are used to express or convey
the information. Such behavior includes facial
expressions, body posture, gestures, eye
movement, touch and the use of space.
❖ . All of your nonverbal behaviors—the gestures
you make, your posture, your tone of voice, how
much eye contact you make—send strong
messages
❖ . They can put people at ease, build trust, and draw
others towards you, or they can offend, confuse,
and undermine what you’re trying to convey.
❖ Even when you’re silent, you’re still
communicating nonverbally.

2.FACIAL EXPRESSIONS

❖ Facial expressions reflect emotion, feelings and attitudes


❖ • The face is one of the most reliable indicators of a person’s attitudes, emotions & feelings • By
analysing facial expressions, interpersonal attitudes can be discerned and feedback obtained.

3.POSTURE:One of the first key things people notice is how to carry and present yourself.
