Activity #1
Soil Sampling

Objective: The general objective of the activity is to classify soil samples as to clay, silt and sand.

Procedure:
1. Prepare two identical clear glass containers, e.g. bottle, jar.
2. Obtain soil samples from two different locations anywhere in your vicinity.
3. Fill in the container with about a half of soil sample.
4. Fill in the container with clean amount of water.
5. Shake well the containers.
6. Wait for 20 minutes for the sediments to settle down.
7. Measure the total height of the soil sample.
8. Proportion the height of soil types (clay, silt, sand) with respect to the total height of the
soil sample.
9. Indicate the amount of each sample in terms of percentage.
