INTRODUCTION
Soil texture is an important aspect of soil and it is important for plant growth. This activity
will provide a more quantitative measure of soil texture. By using soil characterization
protocol will only give a basic description if the soil. You can use this jar method to
determine how much sand, silt or clay is in the soil. This method can take a long time that
need to be revisited later in the day or the following day to let the sediment settle. Soil texture
class name are determined by the relative mass percentages of sand, silt, and clay in the soil.
OBJECTIVE
1. Determine and calculate the amount of sand, silt and clay in a given soil
sample.
2. Determine the textural class by using a textural soil triangle.
3. Recognize the differences in soil textures.
4. Able to identify that clay, sand and silt are different components in soil.
PROCEDURE OR METHOD
1. Prepare 3 types of different soils and 3 jar with lid
2. Label all the jar with labels so that we can differentiate the jar with the soil
3. Add 1/2 soil in each of the label’s jar
4. After putting the soil inside the jar , add just a little bit of clothes detergent and shake
the jar until all the soil and water blend together
5. Leave the jar for 60 second and mark the first layer of the soil that formed
6. Leave the jar in another 24 hours and mark the second layer formed .
7. Lastly leave the jar in another 48 hours and mark the third layer that formed .
8. Repeat step 3-7 for the another 2 types of soil .

CONCLUSION

Based on the methodology and observations made, the soil sedimentation method was
used to determine the soil texture of three soil specimens labelled A, B, and C. The procedure
involved filling a jar with soil specimen and water, adding detergent, shaking it vigorously,
and letting it settle for two hours. The layers formed were observed, and the percentages of
sand, silt, and clay were calculated using the soil texture triangle. After analysing the results,
it was found that soil specimen A had a texture of Loamy Sand with 72.73% Sand, 22.73%
Silk, and 4.54% Clay. Soil specimen B had a texture of ClAY with 39.58% Sand, 16.67%
Silt, and 43.75% Clay. Soil specimen C had a texture of Silty Clay with 2,15% sand, 46.24%
silt, and 81.60% clay. From the results obtained, it was concluded that each soil specimen had
different soil textures, which could affect their ability to retain moisture, nutrients, and
support plant growth. Understanding the soil texture of a particular area is essential for
selecting suitable crops, and the soil sedimentation method is a reliable technique for soil
texture classification.
