Grading and Reporting

Grading and reporting students’ progress can be one of the most stressful
aspects of teaching. It’s stressful since there are so many variables to consider and so
many decisions to make. However, by outlining the many types of grading and reporting
system and providing guidelines for their effective usage, we can simplify this work and
reduce some of the complications. And that is the main focus of our topic.

Main Aim of Reporting and Grading System:

o To Provide results in brief and understandable form for varies users which leads
to several big questions.
Brief and understandable in a sense that the purpose of grading and
reporting is to give feedback on your students’ performance. So, it needs to be
easily understood by the students and the parents on what areas are the
students exceling and to know the areas where they need more support and
practices because if it isn’t brief and understandable, then it would be hard for
them to comprehend on their performance.

BIG QUESTIONS:

 What should I count- just achievement, or effort, too?

It is hard for us teacher when grading because sometimes there are students
who exerts much effort yet they still doesn’t manage to achieve a good result. So,
it becomes a dilemma if we are to include their effort when we grade them.
 How do I interpret a student’s score? Do I compare it to other students’ score
(normal-referenced), a standard on what they can do (criterion-referenced), or
some estimate of what they are able to do (learning potential, or self-referenced)
 What should my distribution of grades be, and how do I determine it?
 How do I display student progress or strengths and weaknesses to students and
their parents?

Answers to the BIG QUESTIONS may be obtained from:

 School- different schools have certain policies

or guidelines on grading and reporting system.
For instance, some schools implement the no-
zero grading policy. So, it would definitely affect
on how we grade the students because there
are instances that the students will get bad
scores yet we still need to give them a passing grade. In this case, your students
may do minimal work and still pass. So, their grade is no longer a reflection of
their school performance.
 Applying what you learn in our topic- So, by studying and understanding our
topic, you will gain insights on how to answer those big questions.
 Consulting teacher colleagues- some teachers have their ways on how to deal
with the grading and reporting system. So,
you can talk to them to gain ideas and tips
and maybe they can also learn something
from you. Especially if you are still new to the
field of education, talking to a colleague with
more experience than you will be a great help.
It’s really better to consult your co-teacher
because they also might notices something from your students that you didn’t
know that would be helpful in grading them.
 Applying good judgment/learning from
first-hand experience- It’s also good to use
your own ways and good judgment when
grading. You must learn from first-hand
experience and besides, it’s your students that
you are going to grade, so you know them
more than any other co-teachers. In that case,
you know what works for them and what’s not. So, apply the grading and
reporting method that would best benefit your students.

Measurements- are simply numerical aids which guides

our decisions in the educative process.
FUNCTIONS OF GRADING AND REPORTING SYSTEM

1. Enhances Students’ learning- done through

clarifying instructional objectives for them,
showing students’ strength and weaknesses,
providing information on personal- social
development, enhancing students’ motivation (e.g.
short term goals) and indication where teaching
might be modified. These can be achieved
through day-to-day test and feedback and
integrated periodic test.
As they say, grades are somewhat like the feedback on how well you
students master a subject. So, it will give them a clear idea about their
weaknesses and what areas they need to improve. For instance, Mike got 95/100
on his test on Genetics but only got 15/50 on Mathematics in the Modern World.
By that, Mike could already tell that he do well on Genetics than on Math. The
next time around, Mike will really study hard on Math related subjects in order for
Him to get a good great on the next examination. Mike will be more motivated to
learn about Math knowing that he needs to improve in that area.

2. Report to Parents/Guardians- Grading and

reporting system also informs parents and
guardians of students on the progress of their
awards. Likewise, grades and reports
communicate objectives to parents, so they can
help promote learning and likewise,
communicate how well objectives were met, so
parents can better plan.
This mostly happen during PTA meetings
where the teachers give out the students report
cards. The teacher can inform the parents if their children are doing well or not.
For instance, the teacher can say to the parent of Student A that her child is
always late in class and always got a low score during examinations. By doing
so, not only did the teacher inform the parents, they can also do their part on how
they will help to improve their child’s grade. And maybe, the parents can tell the
teachers the reason why her child is always late and doing badly at school, and
together, they can plan on ways to address the problems to help the student
improve his performance.
3. Administrative and Guidance Uses- The
administrative and guidance purpose of
grading and reporting consist in: helping to
decide promotion, graduation, honors, athletic
eligibility, reporting achievement to other
schools or to employers, provide input for
realistic educational, vocational and personal
counseling.

Main Point of the Purposes of the Grading and Reporting

Grades and report cards should promote and enhance learning rather than
frustrate and discourage students.
What happens now is that students value grades than learning. That is the
reason why most of them resorts to cheating just to have a passing grade. So,
you really got to motivate your students to learn as much as possible and to work
hard to earn a good grade. We also need to apply variety of method to cater the
different capabilities of the students. And if students got a low score, make sure
to motivate him to do well next time instead of discouraging him. Talk to your
students on how they can improve their grades.
