Evidence: The exchange program

Read about student exchange programs:

Fuente: SENA

Student exchange programs have become quite popular. Nowadays, it is easy

to spend a summer, a semester or even a year in another country studying and
learning about another culture. These programs became increasingly popular
after World War II and were originally created in an effort to increase
understanding and tolerance of other cultures. They were also designed for
participants to improve their foreign language skills and social interaction
abilities.

Many students from secondary school or university have the chance to travel
and study abroad*. There are a variety of options available allowing you to
select the location and type of program. There are also options for all types of
budgets and preferences. In some cases, exchange students live and share
with a host family while they study. This reinforces cultural literacy and
language learning when applicable. The host family provides a room, food and
cultural exchange for the student.

Exchange programs are definitely an excellent option to improve cultural

knowledge and interact with people from other cultures.

*Study abroad: To study in a different country.

Your family is participating in an international student exchange program.
Therefore, you are going to receive a student from New Zealand who is going to
stay from January to April in your country, learning the language and interacting
with your culture. Write him an e-mail introducing you and your family and telling
him about your country and its culture.

Consider the following questions for the email:

 Why did you decide to enroll in this program?

 What do you know about New Zealand and its culture?
 What does he need to know about your country and its culture?
 What is the weather like during those months?
 What places can he visit?
 What type of festivals and celebrations can he attend?
 What is transportation like?

Don’t forget to:

 Include a photo of your house and your family.

 Include ideas and vocabulary related to cultural literacy learned in the
study material. In the e-mail, underline the ideas included. Include at least 3
ideas.
 Use adjective clauses in the e-mail (at least 5 examples).
 Use connectors and punctuation.

Subject: Welcome to the largest country in the world (bigger than the US)
Dear Dwayne Jhonson.
I am very excited to warmly welcome you to my beloved country. My name is Carolina Cortes,
my family and I are very happy to share our humble home with you for the next six months.
I live with my mom and dad, Fanny and Pedro, we don't know much about New Zealand,
so, we really want to meet you to share a cultural literacy which is the reason we decided
enroll in this program.
We don't know much about New Zealand, just the Haka, we know it's like a war dance, but
that's it, we really want to know more, and how you live in one of the most distant islands in the
world,
we imagine many things.
Do you want to know about my country? Well, first of all, I want to tell you about our people,
which is
hardworking and humble, and we have many rivers, did you know that Colombia has paramos
that produce fresh water? no !!?, well, when you arrive, we are going to do a hike which is
led by my father. and many other things.
The weather, hmm I almost forgot, we have various weather times, sunny, cloudy and rainy,
There is no snow, or yes, but it is in the moors, but the most common climate is sunny.
You can go to Cartagena, Santa Marta and San Andres Islands, which has the most beautiful
beaches.
Festivals? Do you want to go to carnivals? Well, we got the black and white carnival in Pasto
It is very cold because it is located on the Andes Mountain range.
You can use a plane or a bus, even a motorcycle.
Well, we hope you come as soon as possible.
Best wishes for the trip,
Carolina.
hugs and kisses
