Student exchange programs have become quite popular. Nowadays, it is easy to spend
a summer, a semester or even a year in another country studying and learning about
another culture. These programs became increasingly popular after World War II and
were originally created in an effort to increase understanding and tolerance of other
cultures. They were also designed for participants to improve their foreign language
skills and social interaction abilities.

Many students from secondary school or university have the chance to travel and study
abroad*. There are a variety of options available allowing you to select the location
and type of program. There are also options for all types of budgets and preferences. In
some cases exchange students live and share with a host family while they study. This
reinforces cultural literacy and language learning when applicable. The host family
provides a room, food and cultural exchange for the student.

Exchange programs are definitely an excellent option to improve cultural knowledge

and interact with people from other cultures.

*Study abroad: To study in a different country.

Your family is participating in an international student exchange program. Therefore
you are going to receive a student from New Zealand who is going to stay from January
to April in your country, learning the language and interacting with your culture. Write
him an e-mail introducing you and your family and telling him about your country and
its culture.

Consider the following questions for the email:

 Why did you decide to enroll in this program?

 What do you know about New Zealand and its culture?
 What does he need to know about your country and its culture?
 What is the weather like during those months?
 What places can he visit?
 What type of festivals and celebrations can he attend?
 What is transportation like?

Don’t forget to:

 Include a photo of your house and your family.

 Include ideas and vocabulary related to cultural literacy learned in the study
material. In the e-mail, underline the ideas included. Include at least 3 ideas.
 Use adjective clauses in the e-mail (at least 5 examples).
 Use connectors and punctuation.

Here is an email template. Look at the parts it must have:

Dear Jhon

My family and I are very happy for your visit in our country and our home
My wife's name is Maria, our son's name is Charlie, and our daughter's name is Laura.

We enrolled in the exchange program thinking that in a few years, our youngest son could participate as a
student and we want him to have the experience of the language from a young age

We did not know much about New Zelanda, but we have studied quite a lot about its economy, culture,
history and people, we have found it to be really fascinating and we have made a promise to go in the future
as tourists

Our country is very culturally diverse, we are friendly and hard-working people, we have had public safety
problems but we have been able to solve them largely, during the months that you will be with us the weather
will be very pleasant, we will be at an average temperature of 25 degrees Celsius.

We have a great variety of museums, parks, historical centers to visit; we hope to show you
many beautiful and interesting places.

For that time of year, we do not have important festivals, but you will like what in our
culture we know as Holy Week, it is a very important religious celebration in our country.

To transport you, we have the possibility of lending you a vehicle that we hardly use, but we
have mobility restrictions depending on the number where the license plate ends.

Well, we expect you to come soon as soon as possible

Best wishes to the trip,

Felipe
