RE 113- CE 2A

The disciples gathered in Jerusalem

fifty days after the resurrection. It was
then, seven weeks after Passover,
during the Jewish spring harvest
festival of Shavuot, when they felt the
empowerment that would transform
them into a new community. In the
Christian church, that day became
known as Pentecost, and it was
commemorated as the “Birthday of the
Church.”

PERSECUTION OF CHRISTIANS

Significant
Periods in
Church History
THE BIRTH OF THE CHURCH AND THE PERIOD OF APOSTLES

Christians have been persecuted from

the first century of the Christian era
and are still being persecuted now.
Since the beginning of Christianity,
Christian missionaries and converts to
Christianity have both been
persecuted, sometimes to the point of
martyrdom for their religion. The
persecution of Christians not only
strengthened their faith, but it also
draws in more people to convert to
Christianity.

UNITY AND DIVISION WITHIN THE CHURCH

In order to promote church unity, the

ecumenical council invites other
Christians to the largest gathering.
Councils are the largest gathering of
Christian leaders in order to resolve
church disputes. There are many
heresies that have spread throughout
the church in an attempt to divide it.

CHURCH IN MEDIEVAL PERIOD

Everyone's life was ruled by the

Church. God, Heaven, and Hell were
all believed to exist by Medieval
people, whether they were peasants in
the countryside or city dwellers.
People have been taught since the
beginning of time that the only path to
Heaven is if the Roman Catholic
Church allows it.

RENEWAL IN THE CHURCH

In light of the loss of Christianity in

many Western nations, church leaders
frequently use the phrase "church
renewal" to convey optimism for the
revival of the Church (as well as
Christianity in general). The problems
with the unworthiness and abuse of
power of those in church affected the
name of the church as well. With the
controversies, the church accepted its
flaws and grew because Christ is the
center of our faith.

CHURCH IN THE MODERN WORLD

The church, in whatever shape it takes,
is entrusted with the task of educating
society. The church's duty in our world
is to be the modern world's voice of
God's truth. The church is not to use its
fingers to discern popular opinion's
prevailing winds.Instead, the church is
tasked to mold societal ideas and to
confront our culture when it does not
pursue the path that is compatible with
God's plan. The church is never meant
to be popular; rather, it is called to be
loyal.
