THEO
GOLD
13. Teacher: “Communication Is Your Ticket to Success If You Pay Attention and Learn
14. To Do It Effectively” as quoted by Theo Gold. Our everyday lives are shaped by
15. conversation, which is interactive communication between two or more people.
16. As we converse with one another in everyday conversation, we are attentive to not
17. only the words that we utter, but also the acts that are performed by the words.
18. GFX OVER VID (MEDIUM LONG SHOT OF TEACHER SHEENA) IMAGES OF TALKING
WITH THE FAMILY DURING A MEAL, LISTENING TO A CONFIDING FRIEND ON THE
PHONE,
PARTICIPATING IN DISCUSSION AT SCHOOL, AND PRESENTING REPORT IN A
MEETING AT WORK
19. Talking with the family during a meal, listening to a confiding friend on the phone,
20. participating in discussion at school, and presenting report in a meeting at work are
21. some instances of the communicative situations that we are usually engaged in and
53. Teacher: The other type of communicative strategy is Topic Control. Topic control
54. covers how procedural formality or informality affects the development of topic in
55. conversations. It is a way of controlling and preventing interruptions and topic shifts
56. when a conversation is in progress. By using this technique, the discussion stays
57. focused on the topic and keeps it moving forward with questions.
58. GFX OVER VID (MLS OF THE TEACHER) LEFT TEXT GFX - OKAY, SO MUCH FOR
THAT… “LET'S GO BACK TO THE TOPIC.” AND “GOING BACK TO WHAT WE ARE
TALKING ABOUT…”
59. Teacher: Expressions like “Okay, so much for that… “Let's go back to the topic.”
60. and “Going back to what we are talking about…” can be used to keep the
61. conversation within the topic when there is a sudden shift.
62. GFX OVER VID (MLS OF THE TEACHER - MID) LEFT TEXT GFX– TOPIC SHIFTING
TOPIC SHIFTING INVOLVES MOVING FROM ONE TOPIC TO ANOTHER.
63. Teacher: In topic shifting, as you change topics, the communication continues.
64. GFX OVER VID (MLS OF THE TEACHER - MID) LEFT TEXT GFX– REPAIR REFERS
TO HOW SPEAKERS ADDRESS THE PROBLEMS IN SPEAKING, LISTENING, AND
COMPREHENDING THAT THEY ENCOUNTER IN A CONVERSATION.
65. Teacher: We also have, Repair. It serves as a self-correcting mechanism in any
66. communicative situation. Whenever we encounter communication problems, we
67. can use this strategy to prevent a breakdown
68. GFX OVER VID (MLS OF THE TEACHER) LEFT TEXT GFX – EXPRESSIONS USED IN
REPAIR.
69. Teacher: You may use recasting or changing the form of message to a more
70. understandable one using the following expressions: “What I mean is…. What I am
71. trying to say is that…” Or you may repeat his/her statements using the following
72. expressions:“Let me repeat myself.”“Again…”I would like to reiterate that…”
73. GFX OVER VID (MLS OF THE TEACHER - MID) LEFT TEXT GFX– TERMINATION
REFERS TO THE CONVERSATION PARTICIPANTS’ CLOSE-INITIATING
EXPRESSIONS THAT END A TOPIC IN A CONVERSATION.
74. Teacher: And the last strategy is Termination. This strategy is used to end an
75. interaction or close a topic. Most of the time, the topic initiator, or the person who
76. opened the topic takes responsibility to signal the end of the discussion as well.
77. GFX OVER VID (MLS OF THE TEACHER) LEFT TEXT GFX – EXPRESSIONS USED IN
TERMINATION.
78. Teacher: You may use the following expressions to end a conversation: “It’s nice
79. catching up with you. I must be going. “Thanks for your time. See you around.
80. Regards to your wife. See you soon.”
81. Teacher: And those are the different types of communicative strategy that you can
82. employ for an effective communication.
