WEEK 4
APPLICATION:
a.) Location:
The Masbate mine is located in the Aroroy Municipality on Masbate Island in the Philippines.
b.) Mining History in the area:
The Masbate Gold Mine is an open-pit gold mine located on the island of Masbate, about
350km south of the Philippines capital, Manila. It is a brownfield site with established
infrastructure including an airstrip, dedicated jetty, roads, accommodation, offices, clubhouse,
workshops, assay laboratory and bunker fuel tanks, all of which require various degrees of
rehabilitation. CGA acquired the mine in March 2007 and became the owner and operator of
the mine. Philippine Gold Processing & Refining Corp (PGPRC) was the developer and
owner of the processing plant. The site was first discovered in 1550. The ore mined is
composed of silver, gold and pyrite with waste material consisting primarily of quartz and
calcite. The ore body extends 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) long and 30 meters (98 feet) wide.
c.) Ore type:
The ore mined is composed of silver, gold and pyrite with waste material consisting primarily
of quartz and calcite. The ore body extends 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) long and 30 meters (98
feet) wide.
d.) Mineral Product:
Gold mineralization at Masbate is hosted by quartz and quartz-calcite veining, typical of low-
sulphidation epithermal-type gold deposits. Quartz veining is developed in all of the
lithologies.
e.) Separation process:
Masbate Gold Mine Separation Process Masbate Gold Cited as Best Mine Site Apr 11
2018018332The Department of Environment and Natural Resources has cited the Masbate
Gold Project of Filminera Resources Corp as the best mine site following the company
rehabilitation efforts. Separation, concentration and leaching processes involve several
operations such as screening, classification, solid-liquid separations, gravimetry, flotation,
and pregnant liquid solution treatment. Sometime, the selection, design and operation of any
process.
f.) Annual Production:
Average annual gold production over the first eight years of the min’s life was forecast at
200,000oz/y. the mine produced 155, 000oz of gold in 2012 and 204,699oz of gold in 2020.
g.) Company’s existing social, environmental, and rehabilitation process:
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has cited the Masbate Gold
Project (MGP) of Filminera Resources Corp. as the best mine site following the company’s
rehabilitation efforts.
Through the installation of reef balls shaped with biological uses and engineered to stand up
to the forces of nature, the rehabilitation work will mitigate the loss of coral reef within the
marine protected area and enhance natural reef as it recovers. It is also expected to provide
habitat for surrounding fish stocks enabling it to recover while providing alternative sources
of livelihood through the restoration process and the active management of the area. MGP is
the only investment in the municipality of Aroroy which helped catapult the town from a
fourth-class municipality to first class through employment, taxes, social development and
management program, and environmental conservation efforts.
