Jiali: Why do you need red paper?
惠美: 我要寫2春聯3。
Huìměi: Wǒ yào xiě chūnlián.
Huimei: I want to write red couplets.
佳莉: 你要貼4在門口5嗎?
Jiālì: Nǐ yào tiē zài ménkǒu ma?
Jiali: Will you paste them by your door?
惠美: 不是,我想送朋友。
Huìměi: Bú shì, wǒ xiǎng sòng péngyǒu.

佳莉: 我喜歡這副。
Jiālì: Wǒ xǐhuān zhè fù.

Jiālì: Yāsuìqián shì dàrén gěi háizi de xīnnián lǐwù, lǐmiàn yǒu
qián, yě dàibiǎo zhǎngbèi de xīnnián zhùfú.
Jiali: Red envelopes are New Year’s gifts that adults give to
children. There’s money inside, which also represents New
Year’s blessings from the elders.

q 紙 zhǐ n. paper
Ex: 我要買一些紙。
Wǒ yào măi yì xiē zhǐ?
I want to buy some paper.
w 寫 xiě v. to write
Ex: 我爺爺會寫春聯。
Wǒ yéye huì xiě chūnlián.
My grandfather can write red couplets.
e 春聯chūnlián n. red couplets (Red paper with popular themes of “happiness,” “wealth,”
and “longevity,” often hung during Chinese New Year.)
Ex: 春聯很漂亮。
Chūnlián hěn piàoliàng.
Red couplets are very pretty.

s 壓歲錢 yāsuìqián n. red envelope
Ex: 今年爸爸媽媽都給了我壓歲錢。
Jīnnián bàba māma dōu gěile wǒ yāsuìqián.
Both Dad and Mom gave me red envelopes this year.

Ex: 爸爸覺得我是大人了。
Bàba juéde wǒ shì dàrén le.
Dad thinks I’m a grown-up already.

How many children are there in your family?

Ex: 壓歲錢代表長輩對孩子的祝福。
Yāsuìqián dàibiǎo zhǎngbèi duì háizi de zhùfú.
Red envelopes represent blessings from the elder generation to children.
j 祝福 zhùfú n. blessing
Ex: 壓歲錢是爸爸媽媽給我的新年祝福。
Yāsuìqián shì bàba māma gěi wǒ de xīnnián zhùfú.
Red envelopes are New Year’s blessings given to me by my mom and dad.
Note
壓歲錢
壓歲錢 are also called 紅包 (hóngbāo). Traditionally, they
were given to children by their elders on New Year’s Eve in hopes
of passing on the luck and blessings of the household to the next
generation. People give children 壓歲錢 to give them blessings on
a safe crossing over to the new year from the old. In return, children
who receive 壓歲錢 should say words of good fortune to their
elders as a form of thanks.

SENTENCE PATTERNS
句型與練習 AND EXERCISES
V + 一下
一下 is used after a verb to indicate that an action is of short duration. It is also used to
mean “giving something a try.” When used, it can soften the tone of an expression and
make it sound less formal.
Example:
1. 我訂一下機票。 2. 請你們等一下。
Wǒ dìng yíxià jīpiào. Qǐng nǐmen děng yíxià.
Let me book my plane tickets for a second. Please wait a bit.

這/那/哪 + Nu. + M + N
If the speaker wishes to be precise when referring to an object, 這/那/哪 can be used
to form the “這/那/哪 + Number + M + N” structure. Please compare the following
phrases.
Example:

liǎng ge rén
Two people
這兩個人
zhè liǎng ge rén
These two people
這兩個人是美國人。
Zhè liǎng ge rén shì Měiguó rén.
These two people are American.
三本書
sān běn shū
three books
那三本書
nà sān běn shū
those three books
那三本書在桌上。
Nà sān běn shū zài zhuō shàng.
Those three books are on the table.

Wǒ xǐhuān zhè sì fù chūnlián.
I like these four red couplets.
2. 我想買那八本書。
Wǒ xiǎng mǎi nà bā běn shū.
I want to buy those eight books.

耳 means “ear” and is a pictogram. Words with this radical often have something to do with the ear or its
functions. When used as a radical, it is often placed on the left, such as 聯, or on the bottom, such as 聲
(shēng, sound).

After studying through this chapter, you are now ready for the online class! There will be a
90-minute online lesson for you. Please go to the Chung Hwa Correspondence School website
to check for class information. The teacher and the students should review the following Class
Plan before class.

STAGE PEOPLE PROCEDURE
1. Study the chapter to become familiar with the content.
2. Listen to the MP3 to get acquainted with the pronunciations.
3. Complete the grammar exercise.
Student 4. Practice writing the Chinese characters so that you can
recognize them.
5. Write an email to your friend as a New Year greeting.

Using PROP2, the teacher shows students the pictures and
students should describe them using “好 + SV” compound
words.

3. 這/那/哪 + Nu. + M + N
Using PROP3, ask students to use this pattern to talk about
the noun phrases.
Ex. (A picture with three cups of cola)
Student: 這三杯可樂
To add variety, use PROP4. The teacher can add a price to
the items for students to add to their sentences.
Ex. (A picture with three cups of cola and $100 written on
it)
Student: 這三杯可樂一百塊。
Contents:
1. Play the video to remind the students what the dialogue is
