INTRODUCTION

Overview of the Subject ELS 144

Language and media have been essential over generations to the mediation of social

interactions of all forms. Questions arise as subjects of examination, both of form and size, about what

counts as language and what counts as media.

Importance of Language and Media

The language and media has always attracted linguists' interest, especially applied linguists

and sociolinguists. Four functional and principled explanations for this interest are available. First, the

media provide, for research and teaching applications, a widely obtainable source of language data.

Next, there are major linguistic institutions in the media. A huge number of the language that people

hear and read every day is comprised of their performance. In a speech environment, media use

illustrates and affects both language use and attitudes. For second language learners, the media can

form the basis source of indigenous models, or even the main source. Then, in their own right, the

ways in which the media use language are linguistically interesting; these include how various dialects

and languages are used in ads, how tabloid newspapers use language in a projection of the speech of

their supposed readers, or how radio personalities use language and only language to create their

own images and relationships with an unseen, unknown audience.Lastly, the media are social

structures that are significant. They are key cultural, political, and social presenters, defining and

representing how they are shaped and articulated. Discourse in the media is vital both for what it

exposes about a community and for what it adds to society's nature.

Application of ELS 144

As a college student, Language and Media plays one of the major roles in my life. It have

helped me in any various ways. One is when collecting information about a certain study. There are

tons of information given, without a doubt, I have to check if the information given are facts. Another

is, I am not easily deceived by the information circulating especially on social media. I now do

thorough searching for me to help myself and also others to not anymore spread fake news and

information.

ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION

INTERNET MEDIA

Use of Internet Media

The Internet, a huge collection of computers connected to each other with networks within a

single enormous net throughout the world, constitutes the largest electronic network (Warf and

Grimes 1997). The Internet is a global networking system that can be used on most devices nowadays

and has become an essential part of our lives. In today's technological era, most of the companies are

getting their operations done over the Internet. There are various uses of the Internet by which

companies and individuals are making their daily tasks more productive and more comfortable.

The following are the uses of Internet Media:

Education. Most of the devices nowadays are connected through the Internet. The Internet has

the availability of broad educational content on any topic with different types. People can study the

relevant topic just by spending a couple of minutes over the Internet. Internet Search engines help

people quickly find the relevant study material in multiple formats (such as images, videos,

documents, etc.). This helps eliminate the need to go to the library to read several books to find the

desired information. Besides, the Internet has also enabled students to participate in their classes

through video conferencing, where students can connect with their teachers or professionals

anywhere in the world.

Real-time Updates. The Internet is helping people to keep up with what is happening around the

world. Many news and information websites provide real-time updates on various categories, such as

politics, history, news, geology, leisure, sports, technology, marketing, and more. One can easily select

the category of interest and stay connected with updates. The presence of e-newspapers and

magazines is updating people and helping to cut paper usage.

Social Networking. Social networking sites have connected people around the world. Social

networking is an essential part of the Internet. With the help of the Internet, people have got the

ability to form social groups where they can share information, thoughts and ideas about anything.

The social networking platform is the largest source of content, covering everything from informative

2
content to entertainment. The best thing is that people don't have to pay anything to use these

services. This helps businesses develop their community and promote their products.

Presentation of Internet Media

The internet has already surpassed newspapers as a source people turn to for national and

international news. Among all adults, the internet is either the most popular source or tied with

newspapers as the most popular source of information. The internet ran a distinct third place for local

crime news, a category for which internet users are more likely to turn to newspapers and

television. However, for most local information topics asked about—from local restaurants to weather

to politics to local businesses—internet users have found online-only sources that they rely

upon—and this does not include the websites of legacy media. This posses a major challenge to more

traditional news providers, especially newspapers, which have often aspired to be a relatively

comprehensive source of information on all of these topics.

Effectivity of Internet Media on the Society

When you visit a news Web site, the people who control the site know quite a lot about you. At a

minimum, they know the domain you have come from (a dot-com, dot-org, dot-gov, dot-edu). They

have a good idea what state or country you have logged on from. They know what Web site or search

engine you have come from. And they know what features on the Web page you’ve clicked on,

including the banner ads or hyperlinks to other Web pages.

News organizations have been fiends for data about the interplay of editorial and commercial

content for a very long time. Circulation lists are probed for insights into audience tastes; features are

pilot tested in certain markets before they are launched in the full paper; Nielsen ratings have been

used for years to determine the fate of anchor folk and story selection; surveys and focus groups are

often conducted to find out everything from what kind of stories have the most draw to what kinds of

graphics leap off the page or the screen; “impact” analyses are done by ad agencies and news firms’ ad

sales staffs to find out what kind of ads work with what kind of stories; cover sales are plumbed for

3
their meaning about what stories “work” and what stories don’t have big appeal; letters to the editor

are dissected as proxies for sectors of the readership, and drastic changes in content are made during

television’s “sweeps months” because broadcast producers know what draws especially big

audiences.

Based on the survey the researcher has conducted for the past year, the most used type of media

in researcher’s locality is the Internet Media specifically the Social Media garnering 48% of a hundred

(12 votes). Since the respondents were reduced to 25 persons, in the researcher’s site, the researcher

concluded that one factor why Internet Media is the most used type is because 1). the locality has a

strong internet connection, 2). every news can be accessed with just couple of taps, and 3). phones are

more handy and just within our reach.

How Internet Media Influence the Society

The Internet was no longer concerned with knowledge sharing alone: it was a complicated

collaborative medium that customers with a variety to produce content, interact with each other and

even avoid reality. Currently, we can transfer data from one end of the planet to the other in a short

amount of time, make interactive presentations, exist in multiple "game worlds," and use photographs,

video, music, and text to share our real lives, our innermost desires. Personal tales are mainstream;

local issues are becoming worldwide.

Information technologies has created profound change to society overall, bringing it from the

manufacturing period to the connected society. Global knowledge platforms are essential

infrastructure in our world, but how has this influenced human relations? The Internet has

transformed industry, schooling, democracy, medical care, and even the way we communicate with

our fellow humans has been one of the main forces of societal development.

The internet is the guiding technology of the IT Age just as the electrical engine was of the

Industrial Age. The internet is a global network of inter-linked networks that mainly provide wireless

interactive communication. Though the internet was first deployed in 1969, it was only in the 1990s

that it became available to the public.

4
From there onwards, its use has diffused rapidly throughout the world with there being around 7

billion users of wireless devices currently that employ internet technology. With about 7.7 billion

people in this world and with limited use among those under 5 years of age, it’s almost safe to say that

the entire humanity is now connected to the internet.

The positive impacts of the internet include the following:

 It provides effective communication using emailing and instant messaging services to any part

of the world.

 It improves business interactions and transactions, saving on vital time.

 Banking and shopping online have made life less complicated.

 You can access the latest news from any part of the world without depending on the TV or

newspaper.

 Education has received a huge boost as uncountable books and journals are available online

from libraries across the world. This has made research easier. Students can now opt for

online courses using the internet.

 Application for jobs has also become easier as most vacancies are advertised online with

online applications becoming the norm.

 Professionals can now exchange information and materials online, thus enhancing research.

To not be biased about this topic, howere, in every positive impact, a negative impact follows.

 Easy availability of illegal or inappropriate materials online that isn’t age-suitable.

 Addiction to social networks can disrupt an individual’s life, both personally and

professionally.

 Some miscreants use the internet to hack into people’s accounts for spurious activities

including stealing data or banking information.

 Yet others have been known to misuse the internet for spreading hate and terrorism, two

dangerously catastrophic scenarios.

The media alleviate the warped perspective by focusing in disturbing reports on the grounds of

anecdotal evidence and subjectivity. If there is a subject in which natural sciences, in their variability,

5
should make a contribution to a clear understanding of the contemporary world, it is accurately the

area that has come to be linked to as Internet Studies in academic circles. In fact, academic research is

well aware of the engagement between the Internet and society on the premise of methodologically

sound empirical study conducted in a range of diverse and institutional environment. Every process of

major technology advancement generates its own fiction. For example, media often report that the

complex and expensive use of the Internet raise the likelihood of disaffection, isolation, depression

and social withdrawal. In fact, the information provided shows that there is neither a connection nor a

positive cumulative relationship among both Internet use as well as sociability intensity. Generally

speaking, I conclude that the more sociable people they are, the more they use the Internet. And the

more they use the Internet, the more they improve online and offline sociability, political participation,

and the strength of family and friendship relationships across cultures.
