Procedures of goal setting

1. Identify your goals

By knowing precisely what you want to achieve, you know what

you have to concentrate on and improve. When there is a target,
people feel driven to meet it.

Decide specifically what it is you want. Identify, as goals, two

things you want to accomplish this year.

Answer the following questions to help you set some goals.

What do I want to accomplish in the upcoming years?

What is something that I find interesting?

What are some things that I really like to do?

Are there one of these things that I would like to learn more
about or learn to do better?

Are there completely new things that I want to learn to do?

“Your goals are the road maps that guide you and show you what
is possible for your life.”- Les Brown

Keep in mind; a person’s reach should exceed one’s grasp. In

two other words, set goals that will be challenging to reach.
2. Write down the goals.

Writing down your goals turns them from wishes into realities, and
is the first step in committing to the goal. When you put pen to
paper you turn your thoughts into something tangible.

Writing down your dreams and goals is an important first step

towards achieving them. First, because writing them down it
forces you visualize your goals. And second, because the act of
writing them down commitment on your part. Only about 5% of
the population actually takes the time to write down their goals
and dreams.

Write your goals down in precise, positive statements. The best

goals you are fully defined visions of how you want things to be.
The more specific, measurable and challenging the goals are the
more motivated people will be attaining them. Set a deadline for
the achievement. Put a date on it.

Determine a deadline for accomplishment. A goal must have a

deadline. If you do not have a date on it, the goal is only a wish or
dream. Decide what you want to accomplish. The goal should be
very specific. If you want to close more sales, how many more
sales do you want to close? What do you want your closing ratio
to be? If you want to move into a different job, what are the
characteristics of that job? Determine that the goal is believable to
you. You must feel that the goal can be realized. If you believe it
is impossible to achieve, you will never take the action necessary
to make the goal a reality.
However, it is important that the goals are well thought out. To
ensure this, set Masterful goals. These are goals that are:

M - Measurable

A - Achievable (yet challenging!)

S - Specific

T - Time-based

E - Energizing

R – Relevant

A basic goal has these five elements:

They are expressed with action verbs

They are written in specific language.

They specify measurable results.

They challenge you without being unreachable.

They specify completion dates

Write your goal in the positive

Write your goals out in complete detail

Write in present tense

Examples of basic goals:

ACTION SPECIFIC TIMETABLE

MEASURABLE
RESULT
I want to learn To play 4 songs on By the recital
the piano
I want to run The entire 5k race On June 1
I want to paint My living room and Before Christmas
dining room

Give your goal the “control test”. Do you have control over what
you want to do? Does the action part of your goal tell what you
will do? You have control over a goal such as “I will learn to
identify ten kinds of trees on my property this fall”. However, if the
action mentioned in the goal is what someone else will do, it does
not pass the control test. The goal statement, “I will win the first
place trophy at the horse show,” does not pass the control test
because the judge provides the action that decides who will win
the high point trophy. Do your goals pass the control test?

When the words are written and then repeatedly re-written they
have maximum impact.

3. Determine how to measure goal achievement.

A good goal has a definable endpoint that can be easily

measured. Identify measures that indicate when the goal has
been achieved (e.g., good attendance might be measured as
“less than 1 absence per quarter”). Depending on the goal, there
might be several measures that can be used to evaluate
achievement—select those that are most appropriate.

Sometimes, it is difficult to measure goal achievement. For

example, if your goal is 100% customer satisfaction, and your
company does not conduct a customer satisfaction survey, it is
difficult to know if the goal has been achieved. In these instances,
look for other potential measures of goal attainment (e.g., number
or frequency of customer complaints, number of returned
purchases). If the goal is critical and there are no existing
measures for evaluating it, consider creating new measures.

Having measurable goals is important because it is easier to

gauge when the goal has been reached, and it provides a
yardstick to measure progress toward the goal. By being
measurable, it is easy to see if you are falling behind and to make
adjustment early enough to still meet the goal. Not only is it
motivating to see progress toward the accomplishment of the
goal, it is also important to know when to stop working on it.

4. Establish a deadline for achieving the goal.

You will need to break things down into smaller tasks.

Objectives let you track your progress more efficiently

Objectives are not so overwhelming
Objectives are easier to achieve
Objectives let you feel the progress

Objectives are the practical steps needed to help you achieve

your goal. Goal can be broken down into steps, with each step
having its own deadline. When all of the separate deadlines are
reached, the overall goal has been achieved.

Determining the amount of time needed to reach the goal and

setting a deadline help to create a realistic sense of urgency and
provide the motivation necessary to attain the goal. When
establishing a deadline, it might be necessary to break an
“overall” or large goal into several smaller ones to make it easier
to manage the goal-setting process. In addition, some goals may
not be achievable until other goals have been reached (e.g.,
training for a specific skill before achieving a promotion), so the
deadlines that are established should reflect this. When setting
deadlines, consider:

• Priorities – which goals are most important?

• Prerequisites – do any goals require another goal to be

accomplished first?

• Reality – what organizational, unit, or individual constraints exist

in accomplishing this goal?

• Measures – does the timing of any of the measures affect the

deadline (e.g., a yearly survey)?

Possible objectives for provisional goal of painting house:

Determine the best paint

Determine color
Determine the most efficient way to paint
Create list of supplies
Obtain supplies
Scrape old paint
Apply primer
Apply paint

5. Identify obstacles to achieving the goals.

Obstacles to goal achievement can come in the form of people,
expectations, knowledge, skill, or resources. For example, it may
be difficult to reach goals because others will stand in your way
(people), you don’t have the existing capability to reach the goal
(knowledge/skill), or you don’t have the time to reach the goal or
the funding to make it possible (resources).

Likewise, obstacles can be internal or external to the goal seeker.

An internal obstacle may be an individual’s habit of
procrastinating. An external obstacle may be a lack of resources
necessary to achieve the goal. Another common obstacle is the
existence of multiple goals. When the person has many goals,
they will likely experience, at the very least, conflict in the form of
these goals competing for their time and attention.

6. Identify how to overcome obstacles.

Once you have identified and listed the obstacles that may
prevent you from achieving the goals, create a plan to address
these obstacles.

Think of questions like:

What can block my process

Am I making any assumption, etc.?

• If you have identified multiple goals vying for attention as an

obstacle, set priorities. By prioritizing the goals you will be able to
direct attention to, and focus on, the most important goals.

• If the obstacle comes from a lack of knowledge or skill, this

obstacle can be overcome in many ways, such as training,
conferences, reading, or coaching.

• If institutional politics or procedures are an obstacle, often

speaking to other people who have achieved a similar goal can be
helpful. Ask these individuals what steps they took to reach their
goal.

• If required resources are unavailable to achieve your goal, enlist

the help of someone who has control over these resources (e.g.,
your manager). Identify a list of benefits to your department or to
the institution based on achieving this goal. Be prepared to
explain how providing access to these resources will enable you
to contribute more effectively to the organization.

• If the obstacle that must be overcome is the resistance of others

who do not believe in or understand the goal, writing Masterful
goals is a good starting point. Remember, specific goals are clear
and unambiguous and thus can be communicated easily to
others, without confusion. Outlining what will be accomplished,
how it will be done, and what resources (e.g., people, money,
equipment, and training) are required for goal attainment will go a
long way toward overcoming this resistance.

7. Review the list

After you’ve completed the worksheet, review all the goals to

ensure that they are reasonable. Ask the following questions:

• Is accomplishing all these goals feasible? If not, what

adjustments can be made (e.g., extending time frames, setting a
goal lower, shifting priorities, eliminating a goal)?

• Will I be stretched in accomplishing these goals? If not, how can

I make the goals more challenging?

• Will I feel a sense of accomplishment in achieving these goals?

If not, what other goals should I add?

8. Monitor progress and continue to set goals

In order to determine whether the goal has been reached,
measure progress toward the goal. Use the measures that have
been identified to track progress to determine if you are falling
behind or are on target with deadlines.

If you are ahead on your goals, recognize this accomplishment. If

you are falling behind, consider the following potential reasons:

• Time Constraints/Multiple Goals – Often, goals are not reached

due to lack of time or competing priorities. Do they have enough
time to successfully reach all of their goals? Are some goals
overshadowing other important goals? If so, you might consider
reassessing priorities and focusing your limited time only on the
most important goals.

• Priority Shift – Sometimes priorities shift, and what was once an

important goal is no longer important. Have the priorities shifted?
Are other goals more important than they once were? If so,
reassess the priorities and focus on the most important goals.

• External Factors – There are many external factors that can

keep you from accomplishing goals. Lack of resources, lack of
support, and other obstacles can make goal attainment difficult.
Are the obstacles you are encountering ones that you identified
early in the process and your efforts to overcome these obstacles
were unsuccessful? If so, work to identify other methods to
overcome these obstacles. Have unanticipated obstacles arisen?
If so, identify potential ways to overcome these new obstacles.

• Internal Factors – Finally, internal drive and motivation may

keep you from achieving goals. Are you sufficiently motivated to
work towards goal achievement? Do you have the determination
necessary to be successful? If not, then it is important to identify
other methods of motivation. It might be helpful to look to outside
sources of support (e.g., co-workers, family) to help provide
support and motivation. Once you have achieved your goal,
remember to take the time to enjoy the benefits you reap from this
accomplishment. After all, it was these benefits that gave you the
desire and motivation to persevere.

9. Needs analysis

After you identify each goal, think about what you need to do to
reach your goal. Where are you now? Take a current inventory.
You will never know how far you have to go if you do not know
where you already are. Do you need to read or do research about
something? Do you need to learn a special skill to meet your
goal? How much practice will it take? Also think about who will
help you reach your goals. Identify all the skills, information,
knowledge, resources, and help from people and organizations
that you will need to achieve your goals, and the people with
whom you will need to collaborate.

When you are thinking about how to achieve goals, focus on the
sub-goals that lead to their achievement:

List the skills required to reach your goals

List the knowledge required to reach your goal
Identify the people and groups you need to work with to
reach your goal
List the resources you need to reach your goal.

Think about what skills and knowledge you will need to reach your
goals.

How good am i already at these things?

How much do I know about this already?
What skills do you need to achieve this goal?
What information and knowledge do you need?
What resources do you need?
What help, assistance, or collaboration do you need

10. Create a plan of action

Develop a plan of action to complete each objective and

reach your goal. Set up a time frame for your goals and
objectives. Break each stage into basic tasks. List the
primary things that need to be done first.

A person may have a list of objectives that they want to

achieve on a Saturday. They would create an action plan on
how they would accomplish those objectives.

Develop an action plan. Determine the specific steps that will

be necessary to achieve the goal. Start at the
accomplishment of the goal and work backwards.

Action plan for provisional goal of painting house:

MONDAY

1. Determine the most efficient way to paint by using

the internet to research
2. Complete a cost benefit analysis for the most
efficient way to paint.

TUESDAY
3. Determine the best paint by using the internet and
asking professionals.

4. Determine color

5. Find a local distributor who sells that particular

paint

WEDNESDAY

6. Create a list of supplies with the store they can be

obtained at.

THURSDAY

7. Obtain supplies

8. Pick up power wash at Rental Company.

FRIDAY

9. Scrape old paint using scraper and power wash.

10. Apply primer to exposed areas.

SATURDAY

11. Apply paint to entire house

SUNDAY

12. Apply paint to trim

11. Celebrate

The most important thing is to recognize your progress and your

success, and to celebrate them. Reward yourself for your
successes. Once you have made progress toward or reached
your goal, you should celebrate and be proud of what you have
accomplished. Every now and then, think about how you feel
about your progress. Sometimes goals are hard to stick to. It
takes a long time to see results. So as you complete a step and
meet a deadline you need to give yourself a boost or energizer.

12. Periodically evaluate your goals

Periodically, take some time to review your entire goal list and
evaluate your progress. Use your failures as lessons for planning
future successes. Goals do not occur in isolation. We have many
different goals in our lives, and we need to figure out how to set
priorities and still reach our different goals.

Although you have assessed your goals on a constant basis, you

must also take some time to evaluate your goals and your
progress. Assessing entails making small adjustments to your
objectives. Evaluating your goal entails reviewing your entire goal
to ensure you are heading in the right direction, need to adjust
time frames, or if you no longer have this goal in your life.
A football coach assesses his team’s performance during their
games, however it is important for a coach to sit down and
evaluate the overall performance of the team and potentially
make some significant changes. He may redesign the defense or
add new plays.

As you evaluate your goals, you will make changes based on your
experience and your circumstances. Your failures will provide
valuable lessons for future goal setting.

You may need to:

Make your goals more challenging

Make your goals easier to accomplish in a shorter time
Seize new opportunities
Improve your deficiencies

To help you analyze your goals, it is important to ask

yourself two questions.

1. Do I have any goals that are in conflict? Will pursuing one

goal prevent or make it difficult to reach another one?

2. Am I committed to my goals?

If one of your goals is to earn a six-figure income and another one

is to get a degree in social work. You may want to run a
marathon, but unless you are willing to invest the time and energy
to train and prepare properly, you are not committed to it.

STEPS FOR GOAL SETTING

STEP 1 – TAKE ACTION
AFTER IDENTIFYING WHAT YOUR GOAL IS THE NEXT
THIING YOU MUST DO IS TO TAKE ACTION. THIS
MEANS THAT WE SHOULD TAKE ACTION AND MAKE
SOME PLANS OR MAKE A TIMETABLE ON HOW WE
CAN ACHIEVE OUR GOAL.
STEPS 2- TRY HARD
AFTER MAKING A TIMETABLE WE SHOULD WORK
VERY HARD INORDER TO ACHIEVE IT, SO OUR
RESULT WILL BE GOOD.
STEP 3- KEEP PRACTISIG
EVEN THOUGH FOLLOWING THAT TIMETABLE IS
HARD YOU MUST NOT GIVE UP, YOU MUST BE
PRACTISING A LOT AS PRACTISE MAKES A MAN
PERFECT!
STEP 4- EXPLORE A DIFFERENT WAY
NOW WE SHOULD MAKE OUR THINKING A STEP
STANDARDISED AND WE SHOULD EXPLORE A
DIFFERENT WAY TO ACHIEVE OUR GOAL.
STEP 5- ASK SOMEONE FOR ADVICE
NOW YOU CAN ASK SOMEONE TO GUIDE YOU WHOM
YOU THINK IS APT FOR YOU.

STEP 6- DO YOUR BEST

NOW YOU SHOULD DO YOUR BEST IN PERFORMING A
DIFFERENT WAY TO ACHIEVE YOUR GOAL.

STEP 7- LEARN HOW OTHERS DID

ITS TIME TO LOOK AT SOMEONE ELSE’S IDEA SO
THAT YOU MAY GET AN IDEA, BUT DON’T COPY
THEIRS AS THEIR GOAL AND YOURS IS TOTALLY
DIFFERENT!
STEP 8 - BUILD APON YOUR STRENGTHS
NOW YOU CAN START FOLLOWING YOUR NEXT PATH
OF ATTAINING YOUR GOAL.
STEP 9- REVIEW AND FIX MISTAKES
NOW SPOT OUT YOUR MISTAKES AND FIX THEM SO
THEY HELP YOU TO BE EVEN MORE PERFECT.
STEP 10- DON’T GIVE UP
NOW FINALLY, DON’T GIVE UP YOUR GOAL. ONLY
SOME MORE DAYS LEFT FOR YOU TO ACHIEVE IT.

INVENTIONS OF MODERN ERA THAT

YOU FEEL ARE INCREDIBLE.LIST
THEIR NAMES AND THEIR FUNCTIONS.
The inventions of modern era that I feel incredible are:
The electric furnace (1889) it was “the only means
for commercially producing Carborundum (the
hardest of all manufactured substances).” The electric
furnace also converted aluminum “from a merely
precious to very useful metal” (by reducing its price
98 percent), and was “radically transforming the steel
industry.”
The steam turbine invented by Charles Parsons in
1884 and commercially introduced over the next 10
years. A huge improvement in powering ships, the
more far-reaching use of this invention was to drive
generators that produced electricity.
The gasoline-powered automobile. Many inventors
worked toward the goal of a “self-propelled” vehicle
in the 19th century. Wyman gave the honor
specifically to Gottleib Daimler for his 1889 engine,
arguing: “a century's insistent but unsuccessful
endeavor to provide a practical self-propelled car
proves that the success of any type that once
answered requirements would be immediate. Such
success did come with the advent of the Daimler
motor, and not before.”
The moving picture. Entertainment always will be
important to people. “The moving picture has
transformed the amusements of the multitude.” The
technical pioneer he cited was Thomas Edison.
Wireless Telegraphy. Systems for transmitting
information between people have been around for
centuries, perhaps millennia. Telegraph signals got a
speed boost in the U.S. from Samuel Morse and
Alfred Vail. Wireless telegraphy as invented by
Guglielmo Marconi, later evolving into radio, set
information free from wires.
While some musical instruments have been around
for centuries (the oldest flute is thought to be at least
35,000 years old!) the saxophone is a relatively
recent invention. The first saxophone was patented
by Antoine-Joseph Sax in Paris in 1846. It was the
first instrument to combine a reed (as in a clarinet)
with a brass bell (as in a trumpet). Without its unique
sound, we would never have heard jazz, or any of the
music styles that followed in its footsteps.
A list of inventions would simply be incomplete
without mention of the Wright brothers’ historic
flight. In 1903 the Wrights demonstrated that an
airplane could sustain flight under the control of a
pilot, a feat that had never before been accomplished.
This invention changed everything from travel to
shipping. Without the Wright flyer, we wouldn’t have
destination weddings or last-minute shipping for
Christmas.
Whether you’re currently in a library, laboratory, or
bathroom stall, you wouldn’t be reading this list
without the invention of the personal computer. In
1977 Stephen Wozniak unveiled the Apple II, the PC
that arguably paved the way to widespread personal
home computer use. Apple has since become a
household name, and the computer has evolved from
what once took up an entire room to a device that can
fit in your purse or pocket. Now that’s what I call
science.
E-textiles are a developing technology in which
wearable fibers and electronics are woven together to
create a flexible, wearable device. Labs have been
developing wearable’s that light up using LED lights
as well as clothes that respond to outside stimuli such
as lighting conditions. One laboratory has even
developed a keyboard “apron” that can be worn and
used with any portable electronic device.
Even when limbs have been amputated, the brain still
behaves as if they are there. Harnessing signals from
the brain through electrodes and remaining nerve
endings (sometimes renovated if needed), scientists
have developed prosthetic limbs that respond to
thought. "Bionic" arms are capable of picking up
fragile objects without crushing them and of moving
fingers individually. In 2012 a man climbed the stairs
of Chicago’s Willis Tower using a mind-controlled
prosthetic leg.

DEFINE MOTIVATION AND DOES

MOTIVATION HAVE ANY ROLE IN AN
INDIVIDUAL'S GOAL SETTING
PROCESS? EXPLAIN WITH AN
EXAMPLE

Motivation is the process that initiates, guides, and

maintains goal-oriented behaviors. It is what causes you
to act, whether it is getting a glass of water to reduce
thirst or reading a book to gain knowledge.
Motivation involves the biological, emotional, social, and
cognitive forces that activate behavior. In everyday usage,
the term "motivation" is frequently used to describe why a
person does something. It is the driving force behind
human actions.
Motivation doesn't just refer to the factors that activate
behaviors; it also involves the factors that direct and
maintain these goal-directed actions (though such motives
are rarely directly observable). As a result, we often have
to infer the reasons why people do the things that they do
based on observable behaviors.1
What exactly lies behind the motivations for why we act?
Psychologists have proposed different theories of
motivation, including drive theory, instinct theory, and
humanistic theory (such as Maslow's hierarchy of needs).
The reality is that there are many different forces that
guide and direct our motivations. If you want to achieve
greatness, you need to stop asking for permission. This is
why motivation is important in life because it stops asking
questions and aligns you to work towards your goals.
Goals are the stepping stones toward your dreams so in
order to achieve them; you need motivation to keep you
chugging along towards them.
Not everyone is born with motivation. There is a severe
lack in some who believe ‘I’ll get to that one day’ or ‘the
timing isn’t right’ or a classic case of ‘I can’t do that’.
Motivation is the defining factor that turns a good thought
into immediate action. It turns a good idea into a business
and can positively impact the world around you.
Without motivation, you can’t achieve anything. There
are no goal posts to aim for and no purpose to strive
towards.
Motivation is an important life skill. The reason it’s
important is because every person on this earth is unique
and has a purpose. To steward your purpose well, you
have to be motivated to work towards your goals which
helps your dreams become a reality. Not1 just for your
sake, but the sake of others as well.
If Steve Jobs wasn’t motivated to start Apple, you
wouldn’t have a MacBook air, iPhone or iPod.
You wouldn’t be holding that designer handbag or be
wearing those clothes if a designer wasn’t motivated to
turn their visualization into a realization.
You live in a world where motivation has solved
problems and produced products and services you never
knew you needed.
Motivation can also help you personally to be the best you
can be. This can have a positive effect on your
confidence, relationships and the community you live in.
If you’re still not convinced about building up your
motivation, here are eight reasons why motivation is
important in life.
What is your goal? How much
personal control or influence do
you have over your goal?

My goal is to become a doctor. Not specifically

any course in a doctor but my ambition is to
become a very good and a famous doctor. My
wish is to make all the people get treatment in a
very cheap cost no matter if it is a surgery or a
very difficult operation like the open heart
surgery. This is my only dream because I have
seen a lot of people struggling in order to get
treatment and good medication especially
during this covid-19 pandemic. I had seen a lot
of people struggling and starving without any
food and waiting in the hospital to admit the
covid-19 patients and a lot of people who are
affected by the disease were struggling to
breathe in and out oxygen as the disease
particularly damages the function of the lungs, it
was one of the dreadful moments for them in
their life. But at that time too the hospitals were
only aiming for money and they got lakhs and
lakhs of money. They did not value a person’s
life but the money. At that time, I felt like if I
was a doctor and I had my own hospital, I
would have served the people whole-heartedly
without borrowing any money from them. The
second reason for me to become a doctor is that,
my sister’s aim is also to become a doctor but
she was not able to fulfill it. So I think if I
become a doctor, maybe she might be delighted
and rejoice that I am a doctor.
