Innovation without limits
Offering innovative solutions to the utility, construction and housing
sectors, Saint-Gobain Pipelines forms a part of the global Saint-Gobain
Group. Saint-Gobain Pipelines is able to draw on the vast R&D and
world wide production capabilities of the group to provide innovative
and cost-effective solutions to the market. At Saint-Gobain Pipelines
investment in innovative technology is paramount, without this the
company would be unable to offer the new and improved products
and services which are at the very foundations of its business.

PAM Directional is one such product brought to market thanks to the

extensive experience and expertise of the worldwide Saint-Gobain
Pipelines team. A simple and effective ductile iron solution to situations
where open cut trenches are not suitable or possible.

Range overview & technical detail

Application PAM Directional – Saint-Gobain Pipelines ductile

iron directional drilling and pipe bursting pipes – can
be used for both water and sewer applications.
Diameter range DN100 – 700
Joint Self-anchored pushfit. Double chambered socket.
(See also section on Joints.)
Gasket Tyton or Rapid gasket
Coating 200g/m2 zinc plus 5mm cement (ZM-U).
A highly robust & rigorously tested protective
coating, suitable for all drilling & soil conditions
(e.g. rocks, aggressive soil, etc). In no circumstances
is further protection required.
Lining Sewer (EN 598) – Alumina cement
Water (EN 545) – Blast furnace cement
The water pipe is approved for use with potable
water by the Secretary of State for the
Environment, Transport and the Regions in
accordance with Regulation 31 of the Water Supply
(Water Quality) Regulations 2000.

For further details on the dimensions of the pipes see the Product
information section.

Experience
These pipes have been used in numerous projects across Europe over
the last 10 years. There have been no experiences of joint or pipeline
failure. The maximum length carried out to date has been 1,500m using
a DN150. The longest project in a larger bore currently stands at 1,100m
of DN600 PAM Directional pipe. Further details about the projects
carried out are available, including some case studies.

Joints
PAM Directional is assembled by way of a simple anchored push fit
jointing system. The double chambered socket allows for use of a locking
ring which acts as both an anchorage point to enable the pipe to be
pulled through the required drilling channel and a thrust restraint for the
pipeline. This joint is protected from abrasive conditions with the use of a
rubber protective collar and a metal sheet cone.

To joint a PAM Directional pipe:

1 Ensure that the rubber protective collar is on the spigot end of pipe
to be jointed (pulled back slightly from the joint) and that the metal
sheet is fitted via the spigot end of the jointing pipe and pulled
adjacent to the socket.

2 Place the rubber gasket into the receiving socket (as per normal
ductile iron pipe installation).

3 Place the locking ring in 2nd chamber (nearest to socket face) of the
receiving socket using the insertion tool.

4 Hold the locking ring open using the spacer and push the spigot end
of pipe into the socket.

5 Cover the joint with the rubber protective collar.

6 Position the metal sheet over the rubber protective collar.

7 Hammer the metal sheet at the edges to ensure it remains in place.

8 The pipe is ready to be pulled into the drilling channel.

Tooling required for completing the joint includes jointing tackle as per
normal ductile iron pipe, a locking ring insertion tool, spacer, and a hammer
for securing the metal sheet.

The jointing process can be carried out in a confined area during the pulling
of the pipe through the drilling channel, if space is available it is also
possible to lay out and joint the whole pipeline before pulling into the • Easy to install
drilling channel.
• Robust and durable
PAM Directional pipes can be jointed as normal with PAM Natural and
PAM Integral pipes and fittings. • Safe and secure
For details on the angular deflection of the joints and the radius of the • Effective in all conditions
drilling channel, see the Product information section.
Installation calculations & technical support
Saint-Gobain have developed a tool that will calculate the exact pulling
forces required on a specific project and will also make weight and lift
calculations to ensure that the pipe is correctly balanced in the drilling
channel. This tool will ensure optimal installation.
Project information required for these calculations:
• Diameter of pipe intended for use
• Length of project
• Application
The calculation tool assumes the use of 1.3kg/L density of bentonite
as standard.
The drilling channel is required to be 1.3 times the outside diameter
of the socket of the pipe. The minimum drilling channel required for
each diameter is shown in the product information tables at the back
of this leaflet.
On a 6m long pipe with a deflection of 3 degrees, the maximum joint
offset of each pipe can be 314mm. Therefore the minimum radius
achievable on 3 degrees of deflection will be 115m.
On a 6m long pipe with a deflection of 2 degrees, the maximum joint
offset of each pipe can be 209mm. Therefore the minimum radius
achievable on 2 degrees of deflection will be 172m.
In comparison with other materials no additional site equipment
(drilling rig etc) is required for directionally drilling with ductile iron pipe.
Ductile iron specific pulling heads are available to order with the pipe.
Full technical support is available from an experienced team of
engineers, either by telephone or where required, through visits to site.

Benefits of ductile iron for directional drilling

& pipe bursting
The table below highlights the advantages using ductile iron in a directional
drilling application over the current industry-preferred material, PE.

Additional notes on pipe & joint performance

• The joint has a high factor of safety and has been tested beyond its 3º service limit without failure.
• If it is necessary, the pipe can be pulled back out without the joints failing. It is possible that additional
force will be needed to pull the pipe.

• The maximum external pressure that these pipes can operate under is 6 bar.
