QUALITY CONTROL PROCEDURE Date 01 / 10 / 2002

1. SCOPE:

This procedure is to cover post weld heat treatment for pressure vessels, Boilers and Boiler
External piping manufactured from carbon steels.

2. PURPOSE:

To ensure PWHT is carried out in a controlled defined manner.

3. REFERENCES:

a- ASME B & PV Code, Section VIII, Div 1 applicable edition/addenda.

b- ASME I C- ASME B 31.1
4. DEFINITIONS:

ASME B & PV. ASME Code for Boilers & Pressure Vessels.
ASME (I) ASME Code ( Rules for construction of power Boilers )
ASME B 31.1 Power Piping
5. APPLICATION:

5.1 The need for post weld heat treatment is dictated by the Code, but under certain
corrosive environment conditions, it may be necessary, irrespective of Code
requirements, to avoid possible stress corrosion failure.
5.2 Post weld heat treatment shall be carried out at the stage of manufacture prior to the
hydrostatic test or any machining.
5.3 Post weld heat treatment shall be performed for any of the following cases:
5.3.1 Vessels where the wall thickness at any weld connection exceeds that listed in the
code.
5.3.2 Vessels intended for service with media liable to cause stress corrosion cracking
in service.
5.3.3 Where specified by Purchaser.

6. PROCEDURE:

6.1 The vessel shall be heat treated by heating as a whole in an enclosed furnace by a
qualified subcontractor in accordance with ARESCO procedure using calibrated
equipment
6.2 Local post weld heat treatment shall be carried out using electric heaters.
6.3 The soak Temperature, Soak time, heating and cooling rates shall be as prescribed by the
Applicable Construction Code.

6.4 Details of procedure shall be attached by the data sheet for every job (See page 5/5).

7. VERIFICATION:

The output chart from the calibrated control unit of PWHT Equipment shall verify the heating
rate, soak temperature, hold time, and cooling rate. The chart shall be documented

8. ATTACHMENTS:

Data Sheet form for PWHT is attached in page no. 5 of this procedure.
