PROCEDURE

1. SCOPE :

This procedure describes the system used for the handling of welding
consumables during storing and welding.

2. DESCRIPTION OF AVAILABLE MEANS :

a) General store : Dry storage in ambient temperature.

b) Electrode store : Dry store in ambient temperature.
c) Baking Oven : Heated up to 350°C (or according to Manufacturer’s
instructions).
d) Holding Oven : Temperature 120°C - 150°C
e) Portable Ovens : Temperature 80°C - 120°C of capacity of one
package.
f) Drying Oven for fluxes : Temperature 100°C - 120°C.

3. TREATMENT OF ELECTRODES IN THE SHOP :

a) The storage in the general store shall always be in the original closed
package.
b) After opening the original package, coated low hydrogen electrodes
shall be stored in the baking oven at 350°C for 2 hours and then reduced
to a temperature of 80°C - 120°C (or as the manufacturer’s
instructions).
c) The low hydrogen electrodes shall be distributed by the electrode store
keeper to the welders and shall be maintained in the portable oven, at
temperature 80°C - 120°C. Only one type of electrodes shall be in the
portable oven.
d) On completion of the work or the shift, the electrodes shall be returned to
the electrodes store keeper, who shall examine electrodes for condition,
cleanliness and identification before placing it in the holding oven. Any
damaged or unidentified electrodes shall not be used on Code work.

4. WIRES :

Bare wire welding consumables can be stored in the general store or in the
electrode store in the shop. The storage shall always be in the original package
which may be opened. The wire when removed from the original package must
be identified. When placed on the welding machine, the spool holding the wire
shall be identified. Unconsumed wire shall be identified by a metallic label and
returned to the electrode store.

5. FLUXES :

Fluxes shall be stored in the original package and contained in the general or
electrode store. Fluxes shall, before use, be maintained in the drying oven in the
shop, for the period of time specified by its manufacturer. When placed in the
drying oven, shall be identified by metallic label attached to the shelf or drawer
in the oven. When located in the welding machine, the metallic label shall be
attached to the flux container in the machine. Any unconsumed fluxes shall be
returned to the drying oven and the identification label attached to the shelf or
drawer in the oven.
