1 SCOPE
Reference to relevant codes is the minimum procedures for heat treatment requirements
and is intended to be a guide for the personnel and customers.
3 PERSONNEL QUALIFICATION
The heat treatment personnel shall be instructed to perform the work according to
prescriptions and work instructions.
4 PROCEDURE
4.1 General
All heat treatment carried out shall be in accordance with the relevant code requirement
for given material and for the given service in which it shall be used.
The heating of a vessel, pipe or any fabricated component or any portion of same by
means of internal or external methods.
When no heating or cooling rates are given the maximum heating rate shall be
200ºC/hour and the maximum cooling rate shall be 250ºC/hour.
Protective coating shall be applied to all machined surfaces and threaded connections.
Vessels or boiler parts of different thicknesses may be post weld heat treated in the
same furnace charge according to the Post Weld Heat Treatment requirements for the
thickest vessel / boiler part in charge, if the relevant Code or technical specifications are
permitted.

4.2 Heat Treatment Instruction
QCE shall prepare the Post Weld Heat Treatment Work Order (EXHIBIT 06.03) in
accordance with the design documents and code. Whenever test coupons are to be
prepared as per the code requirement, they shall be heat treated under the same
conditions as the main vessels. These instructions and specifications shall be reviewed
and signed by the QCM for their completeness and usage.
Post Weld Heat Treatment Work Order will specify heating and cooling rates, holding
temperatures and times, no and location of thermocouple and method of its attachment.
Prior to Heat Treatment, all old, grease, weld spatter, dirt and other foreign materials
shall be removed.
When parts of two different P-Numbers are joined by welding, the postweld heat
treatment shall be that specified for the material requiring the higher PWHT
temperature. When the nonpressure part is welded to a pressure part and PWHT is
required for either part, the maximum PWHT temperature shall not exceed the
maximum temperature acceptable for the pressure retaining part the requirements of a
specification permitted by the Code provided the conditions in Parag. 132 respectively.
Heat treatment equipment shall be provided with time-temperature recorders which will
be calibrated every twelve months. Thermocouples will be in contact with the heat
treated parts or with blocks attached to these parts. Thermocouples shall also be
calibrated before the operation or they shall have certificate of conformity.
The furnace shall be of such design as to prevent direct impingement of the flame on the
vessel / boiler.
Where more than one pressure vessel or pressure vessel / boiler parts are post weld heat
treated within the same charge, thermocouples shall be placed on vessels / boiler parts at
the bottom, center and top of the charge, or other zones of possible temperature
variation, so that the indicated temperature shall be the true temperature for all vessels
or parts in those zones.
When the vessel / boiler is required to be post weld heat treated and it is not practicable
to do this for the completed vessel / boiler as a whole at once any circumferential weld
joints not previously post weld treated may be thereafter locally treated by heating such
joints by any appropriate mean that will assure the required uniformity. The width of the

heated band on each side of the greatest width of finished weld shall be not less than two
times the shell thickness.
The heat treatment records and charts shall be signed by the QCE, QA/ QCM that heat
treatment has been performed in accordance with the applicable instruction.
Dimensional check shall be performed before and after post weld heat treatment.
