Energy experiment Description:

The purpose of this experiment is to measure the change in kinetic and potential

energies as a ball moves in a free fall and to observe the total energy changes during free fall.

The one of the basic laws of physics along with the conservation of mass and the conservation of

momentum law of conservation of energy. The law of conservation of energy states that the

energy can change from one form into another, but it cannot be created or destroyed. We can say

in general definition that “The total energy of an isolated system remains constant over time.”

Preliminary question:

Q1:

As from the forms of energy we have calculated the Potential energy and kinetic energy. So the

question here is when ball is thrown upward the form of energy it acquire at the top of height at

its rest position is gravitational Potential Energy.

Q2:

The ball from top rest condition when moves downwards then the energy changes from P.E to

K.E and just before striking the floor ball has K.E and at that position the P.E will be zero.

Q3:

As we have studied that if there is no friction forces acting on the body then the total energy of

bod will remain constant.

Results:

The graphs are given below:

Graph 1:

Graph 2:
Analysis:

1. From the graphs the values at top of path, after release and before catch are given in the

table. The P.E, K.E and total energy are calculated and presented in the table. mass

calculated is 0.365 kg.

Height(m velocity
position Time(Sec) ) (m/s) P.E K.E TE
After Release 0.799 1.323 2.7 1.334 4.737 6.071
Top of Path 1.13 1.748 -0.3742 0.026 6.259 6.285
Before catch 1.73 0.199 1.8252 0.608 0.711 1.32

2. The graph is potted between kinetic energy vs. time graph and in this kinetic energy vs.

time graph we have seen the trend line. As from the graph 2 we have seen that the trend is

parabolic between them. It is clear that the K.E decreases parabolic with time t.

3. The graph is potted between kinetic energy vs. time graph and in this kinetic energy vs.

time graph we have seen the trend line. As from the graph 2 we have seen that the trend is

parabolic between them. It is clear that the P.E decreases parabolic with time t.

4. As we calculated the total energy and it is shows that the total energy is not constant due

to some air resistance that some energy lost due to the air friction. Total remains constant.

It should remain constant because of Law of Conservation of Energy. If it is not, then

missing energy might have gone into overcoming wind resistance etc.
