- Also called hydroelectricity

- Converts kinetic energy to electricity
How does hydropower cause electricity to be produced?
Type 1
- Uses dam make water build up, potential energy
- Releases water when more energy is needed
Type 2
- Doesn’t use a dam, uses canals to redirect water to turbines
Type 3
- Collects others energies to pump water upwards
- When energy is needed, releases water, which turns turbine
Problems it causes with the environment
- Alters water temperature due to producing heat
- Changes habitats, organisms that live in the water are affected
- Requires dams
- Dams blocking fish migration
Advantages and disadvantages
Advantages

- Relies on a recharging system; can provide for peak usage and then recharge
for next day

Disadvantages

- Must be near/in water source

- Can’t provide for areas farther inland
- Requires water to constantly flow
Countries that uses hydropower.
- China (largest producer)
- United States
- Brazil
- Canada
- India
