Do First:
Good morning class, today we are going to be working on adding. All of you are
doing so well with your adding, I wanted to “add” a little fun to your math. Today,
Arabic is a language, just like English, Spanish, and Japanese. I chose Arabic
because of the new Aladdin movie coming out. Who is going to see that movie?
I am. I thought it would be cool to know Arabic numerals. If you go to the movie,
maybe, you will be able to recognize some numbers if they show them in the
movie.
First, we will go over the Arabic Numerals and learn numbers zero through nine.
After that, we will play a quick game that will test your knowledge on math facts
that you have already been working on, and on the Arabic Number System.
(5 minutes.)
Mini-lesson:
Using the Arabic and English flash cards, we will play a quick game of matching
(1 - 2 minutes)
Now that you are together, on the ring of the bell, use the flash cards to correctly
match the English number with the Arabic number. Once your group is finished,
you must ring the bell. I will come to your group and view your answers. The first
group to finish with the correct answers wins. We will play 3 rounds. Turn all your
(5 - 8 minutes)
Good job. For this round we are going to use the dry erase boards and markers
flash cards and play a quick game of addition. I am going to write down five
addends on the board and you will need to find the sum. You must use Arabic
numerals to answer the questions. This is an individual activity, you can stay in
your groups but there is to be no talking. When you are done, set your dry erase
board down, and when everyone in your group is done, ring the bell.
First, do you all remember what addends are? That’s right, they are the number
we use to add up to the sum. Example: 5 + 5 is the addend. The answer 10 is the
sum.
Now, line your flash cards in order from zero to nine please. Number your dry
erase board one to five. Once I ring the bell you will see the addends. Write the
answers down in Arabic. Does everyone understand? Good. Get ready, Go!

Guided Practice:
You guys did awesome. Can you please move back to your assigned seats?
Now, you are going to work individually, it is okay to talk to your neighbor about
the questions, but no turning around or getting out of your seats. We will work on
an activity sheet that practices adding. You will write the addends in Arabic and
English. I will walk around to each desk to make sure you are on the right track
and to help you with any questions you may have. Remember to keep talking to
environment.
Independent Practice:
Very well. Now we are going to work on an independent activity. During this time,

While we listen to the music, you are to work quietly. If you have any questions,
please raise your hand and I will come to our desk. Do not get out of your seat.
Now we will briefly go over our activity sheet and see how everyone did. I’m
pulling names from the name jar, so be ready incase I call on you.
Student 1, can you please tell me the addend and sum for question 1?

Correct. Student 5, it’s your turn, can you tell me what you got for question 5?

I think you guys have the hang of this. Good job. Student 6, can you tell me the

Good. Let’s see who is up next, Student 8, what did you get for question 8?

You got it right! Good job. Now, student 9, can you tell me the addend and sum
5+3=8
Last, but not least, Student 10, what did you get for question 10?
9+0=9
Students, you all did so well. I hope you enjoyed today’s lesson. Does anyone

What specific subject concepts, skills, applications, etc. does the student achieve
What specific multicultural knowledge, skills, etc. has the student achieved?
The multicultural knowledge that the student has received allowed them to
explore a different culture by applying their addition skills and learning Arabic
numbers 0-9.
Assess the level of student engagement and active learning in the lesson
I feel that students were able to easily engage in the activity, I called on students
individually, and talked to students as a group. I also feel that they were actively
