LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

ILLUSTRATING QUADRATIC EQUATIONS

I. Background Information for Learners:

These activity sheets serve as your self-learning guide and facilitate lesson
comprehension as they specifically aim for your mastery on understanding the key concepts of
quadratic equations and illustrating quadratic equations.

GUIDE CARD
A quadratic equation in one variable is a mathematical sentence of degree 2 that can be
written in the following form;
Why do you think a
2 must not be equal
a x + bx+ c=0 , where a , b ,∧c are real numbers∧a ≠ 0 to zero in the
equation
The Standard form of Quadratic Equation is,
a x 2+ bx+ c=0 ?
Quadratic Term Linear Term Constant Term

Note: In standard Answer: If a will be

form,2 a should be equal to zero the
a x + b x+ c=0 equation will be A
a positive real
2 linear equation.
numberIn the equation, a x is the quadratic term, bx is the linear term, and c is the constant term.
where a , b ,∧c are real numbers∧a≠ 0 .
Example 1: 2 x2 +5 x−3=0 is a quadratic equation in standard form with a=2 , b=5 ,∧c=−3 .
Example 2: 3 x ( x−2)=10 is a quadratic equation. However, it is not written in standard form.
To write the equation in standard form, expand the product and make one side of the
equation equal to zero as shown below.

3 x ( x−2 ) =10 3 x 2−6 x=10 Distributive Property

3 x 2−6 x−10=10−10 Subtraction Property of Equality

3 x 2−6 x−10=0 Simplify

The equation becomes 3 x 2−6 x−10=0, which is in standard form.
In the equation 3 x 2−6 x−10=0 , a=3 , b=−6∧c=−10
Example 3: The equation ( 2 x+5 )( x−1 )=−6, is also a quadratic equation but it is not written in
standard form.
Just like in Example 2, the Equation ( 2 x+5 )( x−1 )=−6 can be written in standard form by expanding the
product and making one side of the equation zero as shown below.
First
FOIL METHOD
Last
First term – (2 x)(x )=2 x 2
( 2 x+5 )( x−1 )=−6
Outer term - ( 2 x ) (−1 )=−2 x
Inner Inner term - (5)(x)=5 x
Outer
Last term - ( 5 ) (−1 )=−5

( 2 x+5 )( x−1 )=−6

The equation becomes 2 x2 +3 x +1=0 , which is in
2
2 x −2 x +5 x−5=−6
standar form.
2 x2 +3 x−5=−6
In the equation 2 x2 +3 x +1=0 , a=2 , b=3 ,∧c=1.
2
2 x +3 x−5+6=−6 +6
2 x2 +3 x +1=0
Example 4: When b=0 in the equation a x 2+ bx+ c=0 , it results to a quadratic equation of the form

a x 2+ c=0 . Equations such as x 2+ 5=0 , 2 x2 +7=0 ,and 16 x 2−9=0 are quadratic

equations of the form a x 2+ c=0 . In each equation the value of b=0.

III. Activities:

Activity 1. Quadratic or Not Quadratic?

Hi Learner! I’m Miguel from the Disney Movie “Coco” who secretly dreams of becoming a
musician like my idol, the late Ernesto de la Cruz. Join me as we reverse my family’s Ban on
music by answering all our activities and make my dreams a reality.
I have 10 equations on the box below and I want you to Identify which of the given equations
are Quadratic Equations and which are Not Quadratic equations. By putting them on the right
column.
Examples of Quadratic Equation:

3 m+8=15 12−4 x=0 6−2 x +3 x 2=0 3(x−2)=x ( x +2)2 =0

Activity 2. Write Me into Standard Form!

Very Good! Learner, since you already know how to Identify quadratic
Equations, our next activity is Rewriting Quadratic Equations into a
Standard Form a x 2+ bx+ c=0.
I have another 10 Quadratic Equation that need to be written in
Standard Form, all you have to do is match them with the corresponding
letter to unlock the code which is the name of our Family’s Business.

Examples of Rewriting Quadratic Equation in Standard Form:

1. 2 x2 +5 x=−3 2 x2 +5 x +3=0 3. ( x +2 ) (x+ 3)=0

2. 3 x ( x−2 ) =10 3 x 2−6 x=10 x 2+ 3 x +2 x+ 6=0

3 x 2−6 x−10=0 x 2+ 5 x +6=0

Column A Column B

1. 2 x2 +6 x=−8 K. x 2−4 x−32=0

2. 3 x ( x +5 )−12=0 I. x 2+ 15 x−50=0

3. ( x +7 ) (x +2)=0 A.2 x2 +12 x+ 25=0

4. ( x−4 ) ( x−4)=0 M. x 2+ 16 x + 42=0

Activity 3. Set me to your Standard!

Way to go Learner! We are now on our Last Activity, since we have learned
rewriting Quadratic Equations in Standard Form, we can easily Identify the
Values of a, b and c of a Quadratic Equation in Standard form a x 2+ bx+ c=0.
I’ve seen a poster that announces a Talent show in the Plaza, which I would
love to join in and perform as one of my dreams, the problem is I don’t have a
Guitar, help me find a guitar by filling out the values of a, b and c on the
following Quadratic Equations on the table below.

Examples of Identifying the values of a, b, and c on a Quadratic Equation in Standard Form:

1. Quadratic Equation in standard form.
2 x2 −7 x+30=0 a=2 , b=−7 ,∧c=30
2. Quadratic Equations lacking the Linear Term or the “bx”.
3 x 2+27=0 a=3 , b=0 ,∧c=27
3. Quadratic Equation Lacking the constant Term or the “c”.
5 x 2+125 x=0 a=5 , b=125 ,∧c=0
Note: Please make sure that before Identifying the values of a, b and c, The Quadratic Equation should be in
Standard Form a x 2+ bx+ c=0.

2. How does it differ from a linear equation?

________________________________________
3. What is the standard form of a quadratic equation?

___________________________________________________
My dear Learner, I have here an additional activities for you to
answer. All you have to do is to Identify which of the following equations
are quadratic and which are not. And Write each quadratic equation in
the standard form, a x 2+ bx+ c=0 then identify the values of a, b and
c.

A. Identify which of the following equations are quadratic and which are not. Write QE if the
Equation is Quadratic and Write NQE if the Equation is Not Quadratic on the space provided.

________1. 3 m+8=15

________2. x 2+ 5 x−18=0

________3. 12(x−4)=0

________4. 2 t 2−7 t=12

________5. ( x−4)( x +6)=0

B. Write each quadratic equation in standard form, a x 2+ bx+ c=0 then identify the values of a, b
and c. Choices are given on the guitars below which is written in Standard form.
