(The teacher are identifying students prior knowledge towards the current topic
“solving quadratic equation using quadratic formula” with a twist)

Get the correct answer of the following questions about quadratic equation using
quadratic formula. Write the letter of the correct answer on the box provided below to
find out the answer on the riddle.

1) What is quadratic equation in its standard form ?

2) The value of a in the quadratic equation 3 x 2+2 x +7=0 is ?

3) What is the leading term in the equation from number 2?

4) True or False: x 2+ 3 x =−7 is considered quadratic?

Answer: DARKNESS

In solving quadratic equation, if you can’t put the right numbers from the right
position you might get the wrong answer. BE CRITICAL!

2. Presentation:
GUESS WHAT: The students will provide their guesses on the chat box

Which of the following are quadratic equation?

y=x 2 YES
y=x +5 NO
y=x 2 + x − 7 YES
2
y=x +3 x − 6 YES

How do you write quadratic equation in its standard form?

ax 2 +bx +c=0

What is the leading term? Middle term? and the constant term on the given
equation?

2
ax +bx +c=0

LEADING TERM MIDDLE TERM CONSTANT TERM

Note that:
a, b, and c are real numbers (which is often called as numerical coefficients) and
a must not equal to 0
Example:
2
2 x + 4 x+ 5=0
The leading term is 2 x2 , whareas the value of a is 2
The middle term is 4x, whereas the value of b is 4
Lastly, the constant term or the value of c is 5

3. Discussion
There are exactly four methods in solving quadratic equation and the students should
already know how to identify the values of a, b, and c.

Remember, a quadratic equation is an equation which contains a x 2 term

2
y=x
It does not contain
y=x +5
2
2 x term
y=x + x − 7
2
y=x +3 x − 6
The rest are considered quadratic equation
Moreover, One of the four methods used in solving quadratic equation is the
Quadratic Formula. The standard form was used to derived the quadratic formula.
2
ax +bx +c=0
Completing the square in the standard form in solving for the values of x in a
quadratic equation ax 2 +bx +c=0 should be always take into consideration.

How do we derived the quadratic formula?

a) The standard form in a quadratic equation is

ax 2 +bx +c=0

b) Transform the standard form given above in a simple equation

bx c
x 2+ +
a a

c
c) Separate the constant ( )
a
bx c
x 2+ =−
a a

d) Now solve by completing the square

2 2
bx b b c
x 2+ + 2= 2 −
a 4a 4 a a

e) Then, SOLVE

2 2
2 bx b b − 4 ac
x+ + 2= 2
a 4a 4a

f) Factor
( x+
2a)
b 2 b2 −4 ac
=
4 a2

g) Extract a square root in both side

√( ) √
2 2
b b −4 ac
x+ =
2a 4a
2

h) Solve for the values of x

b √ b2 − 4 ac
x+ =
2a 2a
−b √ b − 4 ac
2
x= ±
2a 2a

i) Finally, we have the quadratic formula

−b ± √ b2 −4 ac
x=
2a

Now, how can we use the quadratic formula in solving quadratic equation?

There are 5 steps in solving quadratic equation using the quadratic formula
Step 1: Identify the value of a, b, and c in the given quadratic equation
Step 2: Write down the quadratic formula
Step 3: In the quadratic formula, substitute the values of a, b, and c.
Step 4: SOLVE
Step 5: Separate the sum and difference

Example:
x 2+ 9 x=−8

Step 1: Identify the value of a, b, and c in the given quadratic equation

a=1 b=9 c=8
Step 2: Write down the quadratic formula

−b ± √ b −4 ac
2
x=
2a

Step 3: In the quadratic formula, substitute the values of a, b, and c.

Note that in step 1 we identify the value of a, b, and c as 1, 9, and 8 respectively,

hence:
−(9)± √(9) −4 (1)(8)
2
x=
2(1)

Step 4: SOLVE
−9 ± √ 81− 32
x=
2
−9 ± √ 49
x=
2
−9 ± 7
x=
2

Step 5: Separate the sum and difference

−9+7 −9 −7
x= x=
2 2
−2 −16
x= x=
2 2
x=− 1 x=− 8

The solution in the quadratic equation x 2+ 9 x=−8 are { − 8 ,− 1 }

4. Application
Board work activity on JAMBOARD: solve for x using the quadratic
formula
Students will group into 3, then each group will be given one quadratic
equation and they will solve it collaboratively with their groupies.

The teacher will send a jamboard link on the chat box

Question:
Group A will going to find the solution of x 2 +3 x+ 9=0
Group B will going to find the solution of x 2 +4 x+16=0
Group C will going to find the solution of x 2 +5 x+15=0

I. EVALUATION

Tic Tac Toe!

Students will be group into two.

Students will choose 3 problems from the chart in any direction and solve. 1 member of
the group raise their hand and state their answer, when the group get all 3 correct
solutions in any direction will win! If not, keep playing!

Group A are O’s and group B are the X’s. students will put their code on the table if they
got the correct answer and the teacher will monitor the game.

V. ASSIGNMENT
