Attempt all the questions.

Q1. A three-phase star-connected alternator is rated at 1,500 kVA, 11 kV. The armature [4]
effective resistance and synchronous reactance are 1.2 Ω and 24 Ω respectively, per
phase. Calculate the percentage
regulation for a load of 1,200 kW at power factors of (i) 0.8 lagging, (ii) unity and
(iii) 0.8 leading
Q2 A three-phase, 11 kV, star-connected alternator delivers a current of 80 A at (i) 0.8 [4]
power factor leading, (ii) unity power factor and (iii) 0.75 power factor lagging.
Full-load current of 80 A is produced
on short circuit by a fi eld excitation of 2.8 A. An emf of 400 V per phase is
produced on open circuit by the same excitation. The armature resistance is 0.7 Ω
per phase. Determine the voltage regulation in each case.

Q3 A three-phase, 3.3 kV, 24-pole, 50 Hz star-connected induction motor has a slip- [4]
ring rotor. The rotor resistance and reactance per phase are 0.03 Ω and 0.5 Ω,
respectively. Determine the following:
(i) The speed at maximum torque.
(ii) The ratio of full-load torque to maximum torque if full-load torque is obtained
at 244 rpm.
Q4 Describe the construction and principle of operation of 4 pole shaded pole [4]
induction motor?

Q5. Describe the transition process from motoring action to generating action in a three [4]
phase induction machine? Also discuss the principle of operation and voltage build
up process in a self excited induction generator.
Q6. The main and auxiliary winding impedance of a 50 Hz, capacitor start single phase [5]
induction motor are:
Main winding, Zm = 3+j2.7
Auxiliary winding, Za = 7+j3
Determine the value of capacitor to be connected in series with the auxiliary winding
to achieve a phase difference of 90 degree between the currents of the two windings
at start.
