LET US KNOW

What makes an artistic style unique and distinct from others are the
techniques and methods of production it has adopted.
In a historical period of around four centuries there have been artists
who became re-known for their works and contributions during the
Renaissance.
Each civilization has its own indigenous native art, which is pure until
the introduction of external(foreign) influence in terms of style and theme.
Arts in the Philippine islands were purely native and was only
impacted by western traditions when the colonizing Spaniards came and
then the Americans followed. Thus, the Spaniards having arrived in 1521 in
Philippine islands, when they have already settled, the structures they built
bear the reigning designs of that era.

The Renaissance Tradition

commencing on an art piece Renaissance artist have adopted the
procedural technique of drafting.
The highly detailed drawings are the blueprint of sculptures or
architecture. The drafts were made on velum or parchment paper which is
the initial step of conceptualizing the art piece.
The sfumato technique where glazes are applied, and contours of
figures are diffused as though they are emerging into the light is achieved
via oil paint.
Pigments were manually mixed with linseed oil and layers of glazes
and luminous colors were applied to convey a heightened sense of realism
and three-dimensionality.

Another Renaissance technique is the use of a linear perspective,

wherein artists reorganized vision (ways of seeing).
In a linear perspective, imaginary lines seem to meet at a vanishing
point and the scale of figures differ from foreground, middle ground through
the background with colors also becoming lighter the farther they are from
the foreground giving an illusion of spatial depth.
The use of a linear perspective creating an illusion of spatial depth
gives the effect of a three-dimensional image (with length width and height),
whence, the pictorial plane is only two dimensional (vertical and horizontal).
The sfumato technique earlier elaborated upon which utilizes color
gradience blurs (or smokes meaning of sfumato in Italian) blurs the clear

The unione technique like the sfumato emphasizes the smooth

transition of colors without leaving a trace of hard lines. However, it uses
intense vibrant colors. Raphael’s Saint Catherine of Alexandria best
exemplifies the unions technique.

The cangiante technique produces a deeper and more solid shadow

effect through careful color selection and combination.
The Virgin and Child with Saints by Fra. Angelico below exemplifies
that.

Lastly, the chiaroscuro that produces light and dark effect in painting
which involves the passing of the tint or shade of color to another and is
applied to the entire composition to create a sense of volume like Leonardo
Da Vinci’s Benois Madonna.

5
Baroque Traditions

All the techniques of Renaissance artists were practiced by the

subsequent Baroque artisans. While in the Renaissance it was the
utilization of linear perspective and careful color selection and combination
that created the visual effect (illusion) of three-dimensional figures, the
Baroque ingenuity was in the manipulation of light and darkness that
highlight the contours of the forms and likewise creating a visual effect of
three-dimensional figures.
This “drama of light and space” is achieved when lighting is used to
employ and magnify the emotional tension within a certain painting.
The gallery below survey Baroque works and how the manipulation of
light and darkness created the dramatic effect on each piece.

In sculpture the innovation in materials by Baroque artist was the use

of Stucco and plaster.
Stucco made from an aggregate a binder and water which is applied
wet and hardens to a very dense solid. It is used as a decorative coating for
walls and ceilings and as a sculptural and artistic material in architecture.
In architecture, the Baroque style with all its elements and features
were incorporated in various Roman Catholic Churches during that era, like
the San Carlo alle Cuattro Fontane.

7
The Renaissance and Baroque periods contributed artistic movements
(its style, theme and techniques), which have made impact during their eras
and on the subsequent.
Their lasting contributions are manifested in the masterpieces of the
great artists of their day and age.

In Pieta, Michelangelo approached the

subject which until then had been
given form mostly from north of the
Alps, where the portrayal of pain had
always been connected with the idea
of redemption as represented by the
seated Madonna holding Christ’s body
in her arms.
Michelangelo convinces himself and
his spectators of the divine quality
and the significance of these figures
by means of earthly and perfect
beauty, but of course, these are
human standards.

was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect, and poet considered the greatest
living artist in his lifetime, and ever since then he was considered as one of

“Mona Lisa” stems from a description by Renaissance art historian Giorgio
Vasari, who wrote, “Leonardo undertook to paint for Francesco del
Giocondo the portrait of Mona Lisa, his wife.” Mona, in Italian, is a polite
form of address originating as Madonna- similar to Ma’am, madamme, or
My Lady in English. This became Madonna and its contraction Mona. The
title of the painting, though traditionally spelled “Mona”, is also commonly
spelled in Modern Italian as “Mona Lisa”.

The Transfiguration was Raphael’s last painting on which he worked

on up to his death. Commissioned by Cardinal Giulio de Medici, the
late Pope Clement VII, the painting was conceived as an altarpiece
for the Narbonne Cathedral in France. The painting exemplifies
Raphael’s development as an artist and the culmination of his
career. The subject is combined with an additional episode from the
Gospel in the lower part of the painting.

Donatello was one of the Italian great artists of the period. He was an
early Renaissance Italian sculptor from Florence. He is known for his
work in bas- relief, a form of shallow relief sculpture. His works included
the following statues and relief: David, Statue of St. George, Equestrian,
Monument of Gattamelata, Prophet Habacuc, The Feast of Herod.

He was an outcast in his society, because of his own actions and the lack
of modesty and reverence for religious subjects in his own paintings. He
started out as a specialist in his paintings of still life, especially of fruits.
Among his famous paintings were: Supper at Emmaus, Conversion of St.
Paul, and Entombment of Christ.

Velasquez of Spain developed out of the Baroque He worked out solutions
to pictorial problems of design that transcend the style of any period.
His famous works were: The Surrender of Breda, Las Meninas (The maids
of honour), Los Barachos (The Drinker), and Maria Theresa

In 16th century, the Baroque style was brought by the Spanish and
Portuguese to the Philippines where it became the prominent style of
building large and small churches. Large Baroque churches often have a
proportionally very wide facade which seems to stretch between the towers.

The Baroque style was the first to be imprinted in the Spanish colonial
period, thus the older churches were dominated by Baroque style
architecture.
Renaissance design came in later during the Neoclassical era of art,
thus the Renaissance designed churches were much later during the
Spanish colonial period.

LET US REMEMBER

The major characteristic of Renaissance art centers on the emphasis

on symmetry, proportion, geometry, and regularity of parts like those
demonstrated in classical antiquity. Renaissance artist have also

reorganized visual effect through linear perspective making the images look
like three-dimensional in a two-dimension plane of a painting.
The Baroque artists with their adhered principles of mass and
movement actively utilizing space.
To highlight the forms and images of their visual arts, they have used
light and darkness in highlighting the forms therein and the active
movement of the poses and gestures.

LET US APPRECIATE
