LESSON 2: ARTS OF THE BAROQUE PERIOD

What is it

Characteristics of Baroque Art (1600-1800)

 It was a period of artistic styles in exaggerated emotions, drama, tension, and

grandeur on the portrayed experience.

 Artists were encouraged by the Catholic Church to exhibit stronger religious

characteristics in their paintings. Exaggeration can be seen in the forms,
gesture, mass, space, color, energy, and light of an artwork.

 Realism and Naturalism was an important aspect of Baroque arts.

12
 Baroque architecture was designed to create spectacle and illusion. Thus the
straight lines of the Renaissance were replaced with flowing curves.

 Baroque churches of the Philippines show unique architectural style of the

European Baroque and a reflection of the history of the country. Some of the
well-known Roman Catholic churches constructed are the San Agustin

San Agustin Church in Manila Paoay Church in Ilocos Norte

Church of Manila, Santa Maria Church and Paoay Church.

Sta. Maria Church in Ilocos Sur

 During the Baroque period, Art media techniques can be classified into two.

a. Chiaroscuro technique refers to the use of light and shadow to create

the illusion of light from a specific source shining on the figures and
objects in the painting.

b. Tenebrism is a technique with the use of extreme contrast of light and

dark in figurative compositions to heighten their dramatic effect.

13
Purpose of Arts

There are reasons why artists create an art. Usually they are grouped
according to those that are non-motivated and those that are motivated (Lévi-
Strauss).

A. Motivated purposes of art refer to artworks that are intentional or have

conscious actions on the part of the artist. It conveys a specific emotion or
mood, to address personal psychology, to illustrate another discipline, to sell a
product, or simply as a form of communication.

B. Non-motivated purposes of art refer to artworks that is integral for being a

human, transcends the individual, or do not fulfill a specific external purpose.
In this sense, art is something humans must do by their very nature but for
internal use that somehow balances harmony as an aspect of being human
beyond utility.

However, there are also six common functions why artists create an art.
1. Physical Function refers to objects which make people physically
comfortable.
2. Social Function reinforce and enhance the sense of identity as family,
community, society, or civilization awareness.
3. Personal Function express the artist personal feelings. The artist wants to
share to the viewers personal experience or personal memorable moments
that could be appreciated, and to be reminded to live each day as if it were
the last.
4. Spiritual Function express the artists spiritual beliefs about what they
believed in or destiny of life controlled by the force of higher power.
5. Educational Function reinforce educational value through symbols and signs
to illustrate knowledge not given in words but for discovery.
6. Political Function reinforce and enhance a sense of identity and ideological
connection to specific political views, issues, and opinions that people should
be wary about.
