DISCUSSION QUESTIONS (5 points each)
Directions: Answer briefly. Clarity is more important than brevity. Cite examples or case studies to prove your points.

1. How would you elaborate on the role of massive open online content in today’s information consumption,
especially in a pandemic world?

The role of massive open online content in today’s information consumption, especially in a
pandemic context, is highly huge, considering the very idea of individual isolation as one of the greatest courses of
action to decrease the chances of furthering the spread of the virus. Social interaction has been discouraged by the
authorities, lowering the chances of obtaining knowledge and information from physical schools and libraries, which
brings us to the idea that perhaps easily and highly accessible online resources for information consumption, both
personal and academically, is highly advisable and encouraged. Considering socio-economic and health factors,
cheaper and faster service from internet providers should also be funded, perhaps by the government, to support
those that barely earn enough to put three meals on the table.

2. Discuss the power of wearable technology (e.g. iWatch, etc.) and predict its possible direction in the future.

The Apple Watch, as it is, signifies how advanced our technologies already are. First and
foremost, the realization of the idea that we can easily track the number of our heartbeat, the number of steps we
take every time we go out, our blood pressure, our menstrual cycles (for women!) and even our sleep in a sleek
device in the very mounts of our wrists. Sending a message, receiving a call, reading an email is now possible in
the very convenience of your wrists, considering wearable technology as one of man’s greatest technological
advancement in aid to human evolution. Perhaps one day there might even be contact lenses that might just
provide us one information regarding our environment with the use of a connection through the use of microchip
implants (not impossible!).

3. Identify current trends in media and information and discuss how they affect individuals and the society as a
whole.

The current trends in media and information are Eye Tracking devices, Voice and Tone
recognitions, Contextual awareness, Haptics tech, and perhaps even Artificial Intelligences. Eye tracking devices
and software have been used by gaming creators in a streaming platform called Twitch, to provide their viewers the
raw information as to how these gaming creators see their games and why they excel so much in it. Its also used in
phone brands, especially by Apple, to increase security in the facial recognition software used in their products.
Voice and tone recognitions might only be accessible through certain devices, but only exploits the recognition of
voice. The tone recognition part might just come after a few more years of research, but it’s not that far. Contextual
awareness is evident in the way that certain social media platforms create their algorithms for your usage through
the use of acquiring information through the pattern that is unique to your usage, which explains why sometimes,
ads somehow seem like they are directed at you. This is also evident in the algorithms used by YouTube, a video
streaming platform popular these days. Haptics technology has long been distributed to the world, back when
smartphones were popularized. These advancements are considered to be a tool to provide convenience to human
beings, and it actually has been proven to have provided so.

4. What facts can you gather to predict future media innovation?

With the continuous advancements in technology, media innovation will always be associated
with it. When the emergence of companies and individuals that produces results of their research with innovations
that are deemed worthy to be called a milestone for human evolution, it can easily be considered a possibility that
within the next few decades, or even years, that media innovation might just make our jaws drop from awe. A great
example of this would be the StarLink project launched by SpaceX, a company by a renowned genius Elon Musk,
which aims to provide worldwide cheap internet access via satellite that will never be hindered easily by natural
causes.
5. How would you portray an individual who maximizes the advantages of the present-day ubiquitous learning?

An individual that exploits the present-day ubiquitous learning is not only resourceful, but also
practical. He/she is regarded as a model to those that consider learning as a privilege. Opportunities to learn
cannot be seen by the eyes that do not value knowledge as an asset, so I think individuals that maximize
ubiquitous learning are people who never see learning as a chore but as a privilege and as a chance to improve
themselves.
