INTRODUCTION

• Geothermal energy is the earth’s natural heat

available inside the earth

• This thermal energy contained in the rock and fluid

ENERGY INSIDE THE EARTH

• Geothermal energy is generated in the earth core about 4,000

miles below the surface
• Temparature hotter than the sun’s surface are continueosly
produced inside the earth by slow decay of radioactive
particles

WHERE IS GEOTHERMAL ENERGY FOUND

• Geothermal energy can sometimes found it’s way to the

surface in the form of
• Volcanos and fumaroles(holes where volcanic gases are
released

GEOTHERMAL RESERVOIRS

• The rising hot water and steam is trapped in

permeable and porous rocks to form a
geothermal reservoir
TYPES OF GEOTHERMAL POWER PLANTS

Four types of geothermal power plants

• Flashed steam plant
• Dry steam plant
• Binary power plant
• Hybrid power plant

FLASHED STEAM PLANT

• Hot water at high pressure when

released from deep reservoir forms
high pressure steam
DRY STEAM PLANT

• Usually geysers are the main source of dry

steam
• Reservoirs which produce steam with small
quantity of water use this type of plant

BINARY POWER PLANT

• In this the geothermal water is passed

through a heat exchanger where it’s
heat is transferred to a secondary liquid
• Liquid having lower boiling point are
used as secondary liquid such as
isobutene, isopentane

HYBRID POWER PLANT

• It use both boiling water as well as steam

• Steam is directly is used as in flash steam
plant

GEOTHERMAL ENERGY IN WORLD

• 10,715 megawatts of geothermal power in 24 countries is

online
• The United States led the world in geothermal electricity
production with 3,086 MW of installed capacity from 77
power plants

GEOTHERMAL ENERGY IN INDIA

• India has about 10,000 MW of geothermal power potential

which can be used
USES OF GEOTHERMAL ENERGY

• The heat energy can be brought to earth surface following

ways
• Directly from hot spring & geothermal heat pum

• Uses are classified as
• Direct use and indirect use

DIRECT AND INDIRECT USES

Direct uses:-
• Heating water at fish farms
• Provide heat for buildings
Indirect uses:-
• Electricity production

ADVANTAGES

• It is a renewable source of energy

• It is non-polluting and invironment friendly
• There is no wastage

DISADVANTAGES

• Only few sites have the potential of geothermal energy

• Drilling operation is noisy
• High installation costs

CONCLUSION

• During a time of volatile energy costs and growing

concerns over the effects of fossil fuel use, geothermal
energy has great potential as a resource that is both
environmentally and economically viable.
