What is paraphrase?
Paraphrasing is rewording text so that the original meaning remains, but it has a
new form. All in all, rewriting a passage in your own words is called paraphrasing.
What is difference between summarizing and

paraphrasing?
Summaries report main points in a shortened version of the original, whereas paraphrases simply
restate the original statement in a new way. Here is an example of summary versus paraphrase.
Original Statement:
At the party we had delicious red punch, a bunch of different appetizers, and a cookout. Since it
was at the park, we played volleyball, went swimming, and sunbathed for fun.
Summary:
At the party we enjoyed food and drink and various outdoor activities.
Here, the summary purposefully shortens the original statement while covering its major
points.
Paraphrase:
At the party we drank some punch, ate a handful of appetizers, and had a cookout. The park
allowed us to enjoy a number of enjoyable activities from volleyball to swimming to sunbathing.
As this example shows, the paraphrase rephrases the original statement and keeps more of its
original content than the summary.

Types of paraphrase
1. Rewording of the same sentence

Original sentence: She angered me with her inappropriate comments, rumor-spreading, and
disrespectfulness at the formal dinner table.
Paraphrased 1:
She made me angry when she was rude at dinner.
This paraphrase is an example of a rewording which shortens and simplifies while maintaining the
same meaning.
Paraphrased 2:
Her impoliteness, gossiping, and general lack of respect at dinner infuriated me.
This rephrasing maintains the same meaning but is rearranged in a creative way.
Paraphrased 3:
I was mad when she started spreading rumors, making inappropriate comments, and disrespecting other
guests at our dinner.
Another paraphrase, this rewording properly and interestingly rearranges the information provided in
the original sentence.
2. Change of parts of speech
Parts of speech ranging from verbs and nouns to adjectives and adverbs are replaced with new
parts of speech in this type of paraphrasing. Here is an example:
Original Sentence:
The boy quickly ran across the finish line, seizing yet another victory.
Paraphrase:
The quick boy seized yet another victory when he ran across the finish line.
In this example, many parts of speech are changed: the adverb quickly becomes the adjective
quick, and the verb phrase with the gerund seizing becomes the verb seized.
3. Change of Structure
This type of paraphrasing involves changing the sentence’s structure, sometimes creating a
passive voice from an active voice and vice versa. The change in structure can be used to reflect the
writer’s interpretation of the original quote. Here is an example of change of structure paraphrasing:

Original Sentence:
Puppies were adopted by numerous kind souls at the puppy drive.
Paraphrase:
Many kind souls adopted puppies during the puppy drive.
In this example, the object of the sentence (kind souls) becomes the subject with an active
voice (adopted) rather than a passive voice (were adopted).
4. Reduction of Clauses
Reduction of clauses paraphrases reduce the number of clauses in a sentence, which can be
interruptive or confusing, by incorporating the phrases into the sentence. Here is an example of
reduction of clauses paraphrasing:
Original Sentence:
While I understand where you’re coming from, and truly respect your opinion, I wish you would
express yourself more clearly, like Clara does.
Paraphrase:
I understand where you’re coming from and respect your opinion, but I wish you would be more
like Clara and express yourself more clearly.
5. Synonym Replacement
Synonym replacement paraphrasing is one of the simplest forms of paraphrasing: replacing words with
similar words, or synonyms. Here is an example:
Original Sentence:
The older citizens were honored with a parade for those once in the military.
Paraphrase:
Senior citizens were honored with a march for veterans.
In this example, many synonyms are used: older citizens are senior citizens, a parade becomes a
march, and those once in the military refers to veterans.

Paraphrase: The nerve receptors that cause the reflex for vomiting are stopped by ginger.
Original: She was a successful author and speaker.

Paraphrase: She found success as a speaker and writer.
Original: The still waters of the Caribbean were teal in color.

Paraphrase: The turquoise Caribbean waters were calm.
Original: The majority of consumers prefer imported cars.

Paraphrase: Foreign cars are preferred by most customers.
Original: The museum has a huge collection of African art.

Paraphrase: There is a large exhibit of African art at the museum.

Paraphrase: The refrigerant is pressed by the spiral-shaped scroll compressor.
Original: To make jazz hands, simply put your hands out, open your fingers and shake your hands.
Paraphrase: Jazz hands are easily done by spreading out your fingers, putting your palms forward, and wiggling
your hands.
Original: With electronic cigarettes, there will be no smoky smell on your clothes or skin.
Paraphrase: Using electronic cigarettes does not make your skin and clothes smell smoky.
Original: My partners and I are currently in the middle of getting funding for a new business we are launching.
Paraphrase: At the present time, my partners and I are seeking funds for our new business venture.
Original: The price of a resort vacation includes meals, tips, and equipment rentals which makes your trip cost-
effective.
Paraphrase: All-inclusive resort vacations make for a very economical trip.
Original: Uploading a video to YouTube can help exposure for your business.
Paraphrase: Your business can be seen by many people if you post a video on YouTube.
Original: The fall of the Berlin Wall happened in his lifetime.

Paraphrase: During his lifetime, the Berlin Wall was taken down.

Original – Symptoms of the flu include fever and nasal congestion.

Paraphrase – Stuffiness and elevated temperature are signs of the flu.

Paraphrase – Niagara Falls is visited by thousands of people every year.

• Paraphrase 1: A 28 year old man in Austin, Texas didn’t break into a business and run, like most
criminals. Instead, he took several sausages then simply fell asleep inside the business (“Police: Man
breaks into Austin meat business, sleeps”).
• Paraphrase 2: A multi-year elderly person in Austin, Texas didn’t break into a business and run, as
general offenders. Rather, he took a few wieners at that point basically nodded off inside the business
(“Police: Man breaks into Austin meat business, dozes”).
• Original source: “VINELAND, N.J. (AP) — Police in New Jersey say a man told officers he fled the
scene of an auto accident because he ‘didn’t want to deal with his girlfriend yelling at him.’”
• Correct: A man in New Jersey seemed to think leaving the scene of a car crash and being arrested was
a better option than listening to his girlfriend yell. He told the police he fled because he didn’t want to
listen to her yell at him (“Police: Man fled crash to avoid yelling girlfriend”).

• Original source: “The video of Topen’s dancing has racked up more than 400,000 views since it was
posted on YouTube last week, and the plumber says he’s already been approached in public for his
autograph.”
• Paraphrase: Even though the YouTube video of the dancing plumber was only posted last week, it has
already had more than 400,000 views. Topen has become an almost instant celebrity as strangers have
even asked him for autographs (“Plumber Caught Dancing On The Job Has All The Fly Moves”).
• Original source: “According to Heat magazine, Miley has a list of intense rules for her men-to-be while
out on dates. Apparently her assistant arranges what the guy must wear, do, and talk about on the date.
She’s also not into flowers, so he’s banned from bringing her those.”
• Paraphrase: As stated in Heat magazine, Miley Cyrus has a number of bizarre rules for dating. She’s so
specific about what her dates wear, say, and do, that she has her assistant enforce these rules on dates.
Cyrus doesn’t even like flowers and won’t let her dates buy them for her (“These Are Miley Cyrus’ Crazy
Dating Rules”).
• Original source: “Often, a dog will chase an animal with the focus of a heat-seeking missile. But a
wheelbarrow planter was not part of Belgian sheepdog Rider’s focus. Rider collided with the wheelbarrow
while the squirrel escaped up a cedar tree in Joyce Biethan’s backyard.
• Paraphrase: Like many dogs, a Belgian sheepdog named Rider became so focused on chasing down a
squirrel that he paid no attention to the wheelbarrow directly in front of him. The squirrel got away, but
Rider collided head on with the wheelbarrow. Rider broke his scapula, broke a rib, and also punctured a

• Original source: “College admissions officers all advise against writing a college admission essay about

• Paraphrase: College admissions officers generally tell students not to write their admissions essays
about a lesson they learned when being stoned or drunk; however, some students still ignore the advice.
For instance, one student wrote about the conversation in Animal House, as if it were his own stoned

Original source: “TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — A Washington state man is accused of swapping furniture with his
neighbors while they were away.
Paraphrase: A man pleaded not guilty to residential burglary even though he switched furniture with his
neighbors while they were away. He was drunk at the time and claimed he thought his neighbors had moved and
abandoned their furniture (“Police: Man Swapped furniture while neighbors away”).
Original source: “A 68-year-old Gastonia man says he scared off two men in ski masks trying to break in his
home with his gun he can keep on his walker. And then he taped a note to his door saying if they try to break in
his house again, he will be waiting on them.”
Paraphrase: Two men attempted to break into a 68-year-old man’s home; however, they were scared off by the
gun the man kept on his walker. Afterwards, the man taped a note to the door warning that he’d be waiting for
the burglars if they came back” (“Man Scares off Thieves with Gun on Walker”).

Original passage:
In The Sopranos, the mob is besieged as much by inner infidelity as it is by the federal government. Early
in the series, the greatest threat to Tony's Family is his own biological family. One of his closest associates
turns witness for the FBI, his mother colludes with his uncle to contract a hit on Tony, and his kids click
through Web sites that track the federal crackdown in Tony's gangland.
Paraphrased passage:
In the first season of The Sopranos, Tony Soprano's mobster activities are more threatened by members of
his biological family than by agents of the federal government. This familial betrayal is multi-pronged.
Tony's closest friend and associate is an FBI informant, his mother and uncle are conspiring to have him
killed, and his children are surfing the Web for information about his activities.
Original passage:
William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-on-Avon in April (probably April 23), 1564. His father was a
citizen of some prominence who became an alderman and bailiff, but who later suffered financial reverses.
Shakespeare presumably attended the Stratford grammar school, where he could have acquired a respectable
knowledge of Latin, but he did not proceed to Oxford or Cambridge. There are legends about Shakespeare’s
youth but no documented facts.
William Shakespeare was born in 1564 in Stratford-on-Avon. His father, a respected alderman, and bailiff was
an affluent community member but later lost his financial security. Experts suspect that Shakespeare went to the

Paraphrase passage
The koala bear lives in Australia. It is really a “Teddy Bear” that is alive. It has thick gray fur that feels as soft as that
of the toy bear. The koala has special features: big head, large ears, and little, dark eyes without expression. As
black as shiny leather, the koala’s nose appears to be too large for his face. A gentle small animal, the koala has only
one way to defend itself from its enemies. Its color is its only protection. Making no nest, the koala just sits where
branches fork in a tree. Without a tail, the koala cannot keep itself balanced like a bird. The koala eats only the
leaves of gum trees which it likes best. If all of its special food is eaten, the koala will not look for food outside its
own area. It will remain where it is and die of starvation.
