which came from the top of the mountain,(3) hiking is also an enticing
activity. To see the up-close grandeur of the falls is (4)to discover (5)hidden
gem that showcases the beauty of nature. The time they witnessed and

Let’s Study and Analyze

A verbal is a verb that acts as another part of speech. It is a verb form that
does not function as a verb but as a noun, an adjective, or an adverb. Gerunds,
participles, and infinitives are all verbal.

Gerund (also known as -ing form) is a form of the verb that acts as a noun.

Examples:

3
1. Reading is my favorite hobby.

(Reading is acting as subject. That is why reading is considered a noun rather

than a verb.)

2. Jogging is good for the health.

(The subject in the sentence above is jogging, it functions as noun so it

is a gerund)

Gerund, functioning as subject (The gerund is usually at the beginning of

the sentence.)

Reading is fun.

Gerund, functioning as direct object (The gerund is preceded by a

transitive verb.)

James enjoys swimming.

Gerund, functioning as object of preposition (The gerund is placed after a

preposition.)

We will get good grades by studying.

Infinitive (to + base form of the verb) is a form of the verb that act as an adjective,
adverb or a noun.

Examples:

Infinitive as adjective

1. Give her a decoration to polish.

(The infinitive modifies decoration. This means it is functioning as

an adjective.)

Infinitive as adverb

2. The volunteers returned to help.

(The infinitive modifies the verb returned. This means it is

functioning as an adverb.)

Infinitive as noun

3. To draw was her passion.

(This shows that the infinitive "to draw" is being used a noun.)

4
Participle is a form of the verb that act as an adjective. It modifies nouns or
pronouns. There are two types of participles: present participles (-ing) and past
participles (-ed.)

Examples:

1. I love his fascinating voice.

The word fascinating modifies the word voice.

2. The speeding motorcycle hit the wall.

The word speeding modifies the word motorcycle.

3. The frightened child cried outside.

The word frightened modifies the word child.
