0 INTRODUCTION

Definition of communication in general is transfer of information from one person to


another person and the information transferred must be understandable to the
receiver- G. G. Brown. Here we can already see the main focus of communication
which is we can conclude as to share or to participate in some information changing
process within two people or more. There are many types of communications but
mainly people will focus on two main types of communication which is verbal
communication and nonverbal communication. Verbal communication refers as uses
of word to communicate, while nonverbal refers as communication that go through
other than words. It can also be point out as body language, facial expression and
more. (Lumen Learning)

Nonverbal communication are widely uses and being actively used by young
learners. As we all know, nonverbal communication is part of children’s growth and
development (IvyPanda,2019). This is because at a very young age, they started to
communicate with the elderly using nonverbal communication which is shown of
emotions, so they learn to communicate by process which is nonverbal to verbal
communication as they grow older and wiser. In order to grow and learn how to
communicate verbally, they also need to develop their skills in socializing,
developing their cognitive in conjunction to help them understand things and also
develop balance emotion.

2.0 IMPORTANCE OF NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION FOR YOUNG LEARNER’S


DEVELOPMENT

Nonverbal communication is used up to 93% in all of communication, it is being used


by adults to communicate and also to read the room but nonverbal also important for
young kids as it has a big effect that can affect their development significantly in
cognitive, emotional and social development (Kidskonnect, 2021). So, here’s some
importance of nonverbal communication for young learner’s development.

2.1 COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT

Cognitive development is been refer as brain development where brain is the


most complex organ that interpret every sense, initiate body movement and
more (National Institute of Neurological Disorder and Stroke, June 2021).
Nonverbal communication with young learners helps to strengthen learning
engagement like been said in Park Mi-Hwa writing (2013). This causing them
to experience a lot of positive learning experience through out the day.
Theoretically said, the more the kids explore and gaining experience, the
more their brain grow. In Jean Piaget theory, kids are not only learned things
from books, or in classes or by sitting still on a chair but they gain knowledges
by exploring things around them, playing around and make friends. Here we
can already see that free play session is not that bad, as while playing they
communicate with others and teachers in nonverbal ways and in addition,
help them grow in their nature which is playing.

2.2 EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Emotional development is crucial at young age because in a very young age


they still cannot understand abstract things such as emotion because they
cannot see it but they can feel and express it. So, as teacher we need to
make sure they understand their emotion and they need to express their
emotion in positive ways and also validate other person’s emotions in order to
achieve balance emotional development. This can be achieved by making
them used in receiving emotions, gestures, make them understood other
people facial expression and body language (Early Years Matters, 2021).
How? Use a lot of expression in classes, validate their feelings. This can help
the young learners to understood and fast picking up others emotion and also
mature in showing emotions. All of this can lead to social skill development.

2.3 SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT

Socializing and kids are common because it’s already in their nature but not
all kids like to socialize as they feel too overwhelmed with crowds or noisy
situation. Those are special case which need of special care and treatment,
but it is still in their nature. Communicating is as important to ensure these
young learners are approachable, can befriend with but with the lack of
vocabulary, things are hard. So, the proper way to make friend for kids are
communicating in nonverbal state such as shows empathy to others, being
nice to other kids. This also can help increase their sense of self-worth as
they will be appreciated by their friend for the safe-feeling created and they
will make a lot of friends. This will help enhance young learner’s
communication skills as they will pick up a lot if vocabulary through out their
friendship and playtime together (Park Mi-Hwa, 2013)

3.0 CONCLUSION

In conclusion, nonverbal communication is as important as verbal communication


and both type of communication leads to different yet same importance and affect to
the user. As for young learner’s teacher, good relationship must being build and
maintain to make sure these young learners feel safe and sound with us, teacher. In
order to build a strong relationship with young learner, communication must be put
first and study shows that nonverbal communication is highly reliable in a
communication process; transferring and receiving information (Bambaeeroo F,
Shokrpour N..2017)
