Meaning and Parts of a Tag Question

Before you enjoy listening to someone with various expressions when asking
questions, take sometime to know a tag question and its parts. This will make it
easier for you to communicate and respond to someone. It’s difficult to ask and

time you ask and respond to a question.
In this lesson, you shall be introduced to the meaning and different parts of a tag
question to help you deal with everyday life situation. Hope you are ready!

Let’s Think About This

Two volunteer students will read the selection. Listen attentively and list down
the questions used in the conversation. Are you ready to listen?

This morning, I was waiting for the jeep and a guy came up to me.

Arminio: Hello, Excuse me, I think I know you. You are Rachael’s sister, aren’t you?
Marites: Yes, I am. But where did we meet?
Arminio: We didn’t actually meet. But she often talks about you and you look a lot
like her.
Marites: Yes! we are twins.
5
Arminio: You study in ALS don’t you?
Marites: Yes! I do. And you? What do you study?
Arminio: Oh, I’m not a student anymore. I work in Marco Paulo Hotel, I’m the
manager there.
Marites: Wow! it must be exciting to manage a hotel.
Arminio: Yes! I love my job. Rachael told me you went to Echague last October.
How was your trip?
Marites: Well, it was absolutely divine! I met a lot of people there; they were all so
nice to me. It’s such a beautiful town, isn’t it?
Arminio: I have never been there. But I plan to go there next October. I have been
told they are offering foods and drinks.
Marites: Ha ha ha! Yes I have heard of it.
Arminio: Why are you laughing?
Marites: Because they are not just offering foods and drinks there is a live band
performing every Friday night and celebrities are coming too.
Arminio: Ha ha ha, I get it now. I think I can learn a bit from you before I go. You
have been to Echague Banchetto twice now, haven’t you?
Marites: Sorry for laughing and yes I have. I can’t wait to go back.
Arminio: I can’t wait for my own travel there. I have a question for you about your
trip if you wouldn’t mind. I can’t travel directly to Echague Banchetto from
here, can I?
Marites: I had direct travel, so it is possible if I would travel with a PUJ though. They
are the cheapest jeepney I could find.
Arminio: Thanks for the advice.
Marites: No problem, I’m glad to help. Here comes my jeepney! Well! it was nice
meeting you. What is your name by the way? I’m Marites.
Arminio: I’m Arminio. It was nice meeting you too. Send my greetings to you sister.
Bye!
Marites: I will. Bye!

Let’s Learn

When we speak of tag questions, we refer to a specific way of giving

confirmation and agreement when asked about things, favors or new agreement in
analyzing questions.
A statement and a shortened yes/no question are the two parts of a tag question
. A comma separates the two parts. If the primary sentence is positive, the tag is
negative. And if the primary sentence is negative, the tag is positive.
The purpose of a tag question is to ask for confirmation from the listener if the
statement is correct. It is used to clarify information and to agree with someone.

Below are the question statements from the conversation which are considered
as tag questions. And it serves the following purpose:

To confirm information

Tag questions can be formed through the following:
1. In the present form of be: if the subject is “I”, the auxiliary changes to are or
aren’t in the tag question.
 I’m sitting next to you, aren’t I?
 I’m a little red, aren’t I?
2. With let’s, the tag question is shall we?
 Let’s go to the beach, shall we?
 Let’s have a coffee, shall we?
3. With an imperative, the tag question is will you?
 Close the window, will you?
 Hold this, will you?
4. We use an affirmative tag question after a sentence containing a negative word
such as never, hardly, nobody.
 Nobody lives in this house, do they?
 You’ve never liked me, have you?
5. When the subject is nothing, we use “it” in the tag question.
 Nothing bad happened, did it?
 Nothing ever happens, does it?
6. If the subject is nobody, somebody, everybody, no one, someone or everyone,
we use “they” in the tag question.
 Nobody asked for me, did they?
 Nobody lives here, do they?
7. If the main verb in the sentence is have (not an auxiliary verb), it is more
common to use do in the tag question.
 You have a Ferrari, don’t you?
 She had a great time, didn’t she?
8. With used to, we use “didn’t in the tag question.
 You used to work here, didn’t you?
 He used to have a long hair, didn’t he?
9. We can use affirmative tag questions after affirmative sentences to express a
reaction such as surprise or interest.
 You’re moving to Brazil, are you?

We will only focus on the meaning, parts and purposes of tag questions. These
things are necessary to fully understand what a tag question is.

Now, check if you understood the meaning and parts by answering the next
activity.

Tik Tak Two Tags

A three by five grid is drawn on a manila paper. The statements are written on
the tables. The class is then divided into three groups. Groups take it in turns to
choose a statement tag from the table. The learner in each group uses the statement
tag in the table to make a tag question in the statement. The group then asks the tag
statement to the next team. To win the game, the tag statement must be grammatically
correct. The next team must answer the statement tag appropriately or they lose their
turn to choose a statement tag. If a statement tag is grammatically incorrect, play
passes to the next team, without them having a turn. The aim of the game is for the
group to get highest score, either horizontally, vertically or diagonally. The first group
to do this wins the game.

Writing Tag Question
Basically, the following rules apply: In positive statements, a negative question
tag is needed and in negative statements, a positive question tag is given.

A. Positive Statement Tag Questions

Look at these examples with positive statements. You will see that most of the
time, the auxiliary verb from the positive statement is repeated in the tag and changed
to negative.

(+) positive statement (-) negative tag

Subjec auxiliary main   auxiliary not personal pronoun

t verb same as subject

You Are coming,   are n't you?

We have finished,   have n't we?

You Do like coffee, do n't you?

You   like coffee, do n't you?

They will help,   wo n't they?

I can come,   can 't I?

We must go,   must n't we?

He should try harder, should n't he?

You   are Filipino are n't you?

,

John   was there, was n't he?

Notice:

 the use of do in the two coffee questions. Remember that in Present
Simple, do is optional in positive statements (You like coffee/You do like
coffee). But the do must appear in the tag. The same applies to Past
Simple did.
 in last two questions, no auxiliary for main verb be in Present Simple and Past
Simple. The tag repeats the main verb.

 Let’s Try This

Write the correct question tag.

1. John is a Filipino, ________?
2. The children are playing, ________?
3. Time is gold, ________?
4. Nancy is beautiful, ________?
5. Health is wealth, ________?

15
B. Negative Statement Tag Questions

Look at these examples with negative statements. Notice that the negative

verb in the original statement is changed to positive in the tag.

(-) negative statement (+) positive tag

Subjec auxiliary   main     auxiliary personal

t verb pronoun same as
subject

It is n't raining,     is it?

We have never seen   that, have we?

You do n't like   coffee, do you?

He should n't drive   so fast, should he?

You wo n't be   late, will you?

You     are n't Filipino are you?

,

John     was No there, was he?

Notice:
 won't is the contracted form of will not
 the tag repeats the auxiliary verb, not the main verb.
16
Except, of course, for the verb be in Present Simple and Past Simple.

Let’s Try This

Write the correct question tag.

1. Biology is not the study of life, ________?

Responding to Tag Questions

How do we answer a tag question? Often, we just say Yes or No. Sometimes
we may repeat the tag and reverse it (They don't live here, do they? Yes, they do). Be
very careful about answering tag questions. In some languages, an opposite system of
answering is used, and non-native English speakers sometimes answer in the wrong
way. This can lead to a lot of confusion!

Tag question Positive Response Negative Response

Love is blind, isn’t it? Yes, it is. No, it isn’t.
Teachers are heroes, aren’t they? Yes, they are. No, they aren’t.

LESSON 3

Asking Question Using Tag Question

In the previous activities, you have learned how to make statements into a
question. These questions are often used for checking information that we think we
know is true. Frequently if the primary clause is positive, the question tag is
negative, and if the primary clause is negative, it’s positive.
You are now about to experience the joy of learning tag questions in making
conversation more exciting as the succeeding activities will show you how asking
questions using tag makes learning interesting.
This lesson will tell you how to ask questions using tag question.

Let’s Try This

Read the dialogue below and decide whether the question tags are real
questions, or whether their purpose is to check information or keep the
conversation going. Then practice the dialogue with a partner, if you have one, or
you can play both parts yourself! There are no right and wrong answers for this
activity.

Arman: Hi Jose! Hey! You remember John our classmate in Highschool, don’t you?
Jose: Sure, he’s tall, dark and handsome, isn’t he?
Arman: That’s right! Well, you’ll never believe this, but last week he won the small
town lottery!
Jose: He did? Wow! that’s something! I remember that he always talked about going to
Manila, didn’t he?
Arman: Yes, he talked to you about it, too, didn’t he?didn’t he? I bet he’s on her way
there right now!
Jose: Some people are just lucky, I guess. Hey! Arman, you’re buying a lottery ticket
this week, aren’t you?
Arman: You better believe it, Jose!
Jose: Yes, so I guess that’s all for today.

Out of this dialogue, can you make your own tag questions by
asking tag questions to your classmates. List them down on the space provided.
Let’s Learn

Again, remember that tag questions use question marks (“?”), but they’re not
actually asking questions. They’re just trying to get confirmation or
make conversation.
So, did you understand all of that? Are you going to practice asking some
questions right now? You can do it, can’t you?
It isn't necessary to ask a question because you already know the information.
Using a question tag helps you confirm that the information you know is correct.
Question tags can also change meaning based on how you pronounce the tag at the
end of the sentence.
If you raise your voice on the question tag you are asking if the information
you just stated is indeed correct. Using question tags in this manner helps to make
sure that you are doing something correctly, or understand a situation accurately.

Here are some examples:

 A mom buying some jeans for her daughter:
You wear size 2, don't you?

 A friend writing a birthday card to a friend:

Peter was born on March 2, wasn't he?

 A job interviewer checking information on a resume:

You haven't worked at this company before, have you?
At other times, you drop the voice at the question tag. When dropping
the voice at the question tag, you indicate that you are confirming information.
Here are some examples:
 Young man filling out a form speaking to his wife:
We live on Kapurpurawan Street, don't we?
 Friend looking at a movie signage:
We're watching movie tomorrow afternoon, aren't we?

 Friend speaking to her friend as they walk in the rain:

The sun won't shine today, will it?

Let’s remember, that if the sentence is positive, the question tag takes the
negative form and if the sentence is negative, the question tag employs the positive
form.

Let’s Try This
Make atleast 3 statements with question tags and use it to form a simple
conversation to be presented in class. You can use the question tags below.

Let’s 24 Remember
Remember that tag questions use question marks (“?”), but they’re not actually
asking questions. They’re just trying to get:
 confirmation
 conversation

Using a question tag helps you confirm that the information you know is correct.
Question tags can also change meaning based on how you pronounce the tag at the
end of the sentence.
 raise your voice on the question tag you are asking if the information
you just stated is indeed correct. Using question tags in this manner
helps to make sure that you are doing something correctly, or understand
a situation accurately.
 drop the voice at the question tag. When dropping the voice at the
question tag, you indicate that you are confirming information.

Remember, that if the sentence is positive, the question tag takes the negative
form and if the sentence is negative, the question tag employs the positive form

Let’s Sum Up

 Tag questions refer to a specific way of giving confirmation and agreement

when asked about things, favors or new agreement.
 There are two parts of a tag question: a statement and a shortened yes/no
question.
 If the primary sentence is positive, the tag is negative. And if the primary
sentence is negative, the tag is positive.
 The purpose of a tag question is to ask for confirmation from the listener if
the statement is correct. It is used to clarify information and to agree with
someone.

Tag questions can be formed through the following:

In the present form of be: if the subject is “I”, the auxiliary changes to are or
aren’t in the tag question.
With let’s, the tag question is shall we?
With an imperative, the tag question is will you?
We use an affirmative tag question after a sentence containing a negative word
such as never, hardly, nobody.
When the subject is nothing, we use “it” in the tag question.
If the subject is nobody, somebody, everybody, no one, someone or everyone,
we use “they” in the tag question.
If the main verb in the sentence is have (not an auxiliary verb), it is more
common to use do in the tag question.
With used to, we use “didn’t” in the tag question.

Basically, the following rules apply: In positive statements, a negative question

tag is needed and in negative statements, a positive question tag is given.
 the use of do in the two coffee questions. Remember that in Present
Simple, do is optional in positive statements (You like coffee/You do
like coffee). But the do must appear in the tag. The same applies to Past
Simple did.
 in last two questions, no auxiliary for main verb be in Present Simple
and Past Simple. The tag repeats the main verb.
 won't is the contracted form of will not
 the tag repeats the auxiliary verb, not the main verb. Except, of course,
for the verb be in Present Simple and Past Simple.

27
 How do we answer a tag question? Often, we just say Yes or No.
Sometimes we may repeat the tag and reverse it (They don't live
here, do they? Yes, they do). Be very careful about answering tag
questions. In some languages, an opposite system of answering is used,
and non-native English speakers sometimes answer in the wrong way.
 Respond to a tag question according to the truth of the situation. Your
answer reflects the real facts, not (necessarily) the question.

Remember that tag questions use question marks (“?”), but they’re not actually
asking questions. They’re just trying to get:
