Using the self-correcting materials IM II

1. HOW ARE THE MATERIALS ORGANISED?

Each unit has 2 parts and a sidemenu with links to all of the exercises in the unit.
Most of the exercises have the following buttons:

Check if your answers are correct.

See all of the correct answers.

Start the exercise again.

Hide the answers for the exercises you have checked.

Hide all of the correct answers.

On the top right-hand part of each exercise, there are three icons:

This takes you to the main Grammar reference for the course.

This enables you to print the exercise or open as a pdf.

This makes the exercise bigger/smaller.

In some excercises, you will find a “Hint” button containing information which
can help to clarify specific points of vocabulary or grammar.

When you want to close the Hint, click ‘HIDE’.

In the instructions and texts for many of the exercises, you will also find direct links to
specific pages of the Grammar materials for the course; these are underlined in blue:

In the texts and tapescripts for the videos and audios, some words and expressions
underlined in blue are links to the Glossary, which gives an explanation and
pronunciation of the word or expression.

2. EXERCISES WITH VIDEO/AUDIO

In most of these exercises you will find the options to see the transcription which you
watch/listen. You can also hide the transcription if you prefer:

DOWNLOAD AUDIO

You can download many of the audio files in the materials to your computer:

PRINT
You can print many of the exercises and transcriptions:

After clicking Print, you can choose to save the text as a PDF to read later or print.

3. EXERCISES WITH RECORDER

Some exercises have a recording function so you can record yourself and compare
your version with the original. Obviously you will need a microphone and speakers, or a
headset for these exercises. If you use a microphone and speakers, you will be able to
record the audio together with your version in the same audio file; however, if you use
a headset, you will be able to record your voice only; the audio will not be recorded.

Please note that these exercises work optimally in Chrome and Firefox and each
browser works in a slightly different way:

FIREFOX

If you use Firefox, when you open an exercises which has the recording option, your
browser will ask permission to use your microphone. If you have more than one
recording device, you need to select the one you want and then click on “Compartir el
dispositivo seleccionado” in the pop-up. You will then be able to use the various
functions of the exercise (listen, record, compare).

CHROME

If you use Chrome, when you open an exercises which has the recording option, your
browser will ask permission to use your microphone. You need to click on “Permitir” in
the pop-up. You will then be able to use the various functions of the exercise (listen,
record, compare).

then:

1) click on the Record button in the Recorder

2) click on the Play button in the Player
3) let the audio play
4) repeat what you hear
5) click Stop in the Recorder.

Some of the recording exercises have sound waves and you can compare these for
your version with the original. In this way, you can work on your rhythm and intonation.

You can download the recording to your computer by clicking on the download button
next to the recorder:

4. GENERAL ADVICE FOR WORKING WITH THE MATERIALS

• Exercices with audio and or transcription.

Follow the instructions for each exercise carefully. If the instructions tell you to
complete the exercise first and then listen to check your answer, it's important you do
this. If the instructions tell you to do the exercise first and then read the transcription,
do the exercise in that order.
• Drag and drop exercises
In exercises in which you have to drag items such as word, a phrase or an image, you
can also click the item to select it and then click where you want it to go.

5. GENERAL ADVICE

• Don't worry if you don't understand every word the first time you see it - that's all part of
the learning process.

• We hope you will find the exercises challenging and you are able to put into practice
good language learning strategies such as working out the meaning of new words in
context.
• Remember you can use a dictionary to check any words you like but it's always a good
idea to guess the meaning first and then check in an English-English dictionary;
bilingual dictionaries can be helpful, but reading a definition is much better practice for
your English than reading a translation.
• Explore the materials! Have a go! Repeat the exercises as many times as you like or
need to! Enjoy the course!
