CA4.2 Stress: Friend or Foe?: Is stress all bad?

Pre-tasks

Start by doing the self-correcting exercises which you can find in the classroom in the
Resources section: Stress: Friend or Foe?: Is stress all bad?. You can find the
Resources section in the top right corner of the classroom. As you are working through the
exercises, take note of any new language you learn. You will need this to prepare the Tasks
below.

When you have finished, share one thing that you have learnt from these resources (e.g.
vocabulary, expressions or grammar) to the I have learnt something today folder in the
Forum.

Task 1

Overview

Task type To do Where Length % CA mark

Individual Speaking Langblog 1-2 minutes 60

Before you do Task 4.2, have a look at one or two of these TED Talks which explore aspects
of psychology: Link 1, Link 2, Link 3.

For this task, you are going to audition to be one of the speakers in a TED Talk. Your talk
should be on the topic of stress and include the required language focus (see next page).
Remember, we do not expect a presentation from an expert in the field but rather a short talk
about something you find interesting that is connected to stress. Your talk could be
humorous, serious, practical or academic.

CA4.2 Stress: Friend or Foe?: Is stress all bad?

Audition for Barcelona TED Talk Speakers is now open!

We are looking for people who can present their ideas clearly and demonstrate their
speaking ability in less than two minutes.

To participate in this year’s TED talks in Barcelona, make a one to two minute video
audition.

There are many remarkable ideas, stories and people out there who are undiscovered, and
we want to hear from you!

Your talk must include:

- Introduction to your topic

- Main body (arguments / main points)
- Conclusion

Here is a sample talk.1 Notice how the speaker follows the steps above and uses
signposting language.

LANGUAGE FOCUS
For this task you will need to use the following structures in the CA4 self-study resources:
signposting language and effective organisation of your talk. Use some of the structures
that you have studied. Try and use the ones which are completely new to you and include a
variety of them.

ORGANISATION FOCUS
The objective is that you organise your talk clearly and are able to summarize the main
points of your chosen topic for your audience. If you are not sure how to proceed, go back to
the CA4 self-study resources and/or watch some TED talks to get you started.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
Please see Assessment and Feedback in the classroom.

Task 2

Q & A (LANGBLOG)

Watch at least two of your classmates’ videos and think about them carefully as you listen.
Think of a question to ask them about what you’ve heard. Then, post your response to them
in Langblog either as a video or as an audio file.

You can ask questions about the content of their talks or ask them to clarify something you
didn’t understand.

Feel free to continue responding to your classmates in a dialogue!
